Seattle or Portland?? Travel tips, please!

My husband and I are heading to the Pacific Northwest soon -- Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington.  It's the first time for him, and the first time in 15 years for me.

There are a few "must-dos" on our list, including the Space Needle, wine country, Pike's Place Market and (I'm married to an architect) the Seattle Library.

Have you been to the area?  Do you have any suggestions for places we should go, or any pictures you're willing to share?  Thanks for your help!!

When you are in Portland and need a beautiful break from people and the city get a car and a map. The Columbia River Gorge is very nice.  Not touristy like going to the Pacific coast can be. I personally love waterfalls and the steep abutment of the Cascade Mountains to the Columbia River has many.  There is an old hiway half way up the hill side that goes to a observatory where you can look up and down the river.  Beautiful.
If you are interested in what happens when a mountain blows it top stop by the Mt. St. Helen visitor center.  I am not sure if you can go clear up to look across the valley into the center of the mountain any more. For some time last year the last visitor center was closed because there had been activity in the crater. The authorities to concerned that it might blow again and cause harm.

You are coming to the most beautiful place in the world.  Of course I am a bit prejudiced as i was born in Oregon and spent most of my life in these two states.

Best of luck on your travels

If you have time, a day trip on the ferry out of Anacortes going to the San Juan Islands is always a thrill.  Of course off season would be better since the crowds will be terrible this time of year.  I always liked to drive through Mt Vernon in the spring when the fields of tulips and daffidils are in bloom.  I live in Spokane and the Bowl and Picture campground is a comfortable stop if you have an RV.  There's plenty to do and see here, you just missed the Hoopfest madness this past weekend.  There will be a big fireworks display at Riverfront park this weekend but I am heading out to Colville for a three day Red, White and Bluegrass festival with my folks.
