Frugal Living: What Are Your Secrets?

Our recent story on Rachel -- the 90-year-old car-loving firecracker who has leveraged lifetime warranties into 40 years worth of free replacement parts for her beloved 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente -- sparked a lot of discussions about smart ways to save money.

In a time when we all need to reexamine our spending habits, what are some of your secrets for frugal living? What have you learned to live without? How do you get something for nothing? Share your tips!

I have a few things that make living cheaper and, in some cases, better.

For example, to avoid using deodorants containing aluminum salts, I found that a small amount of liquid soap dabbed on the armpits worked at least as well.  I usually follow with a little of my after-shave because my wife likes it.  I doubt that it helps, but it's little enough to do for her, tight?

The after-shave I have economized on for years.  After all, what's in it is water, alcohol, and scent.  Most are too strong to suit me, so I started adding some alcohol.  Now, I buy cologne that Dora likes, add water and alcohol and have a very inexpensive after-shave.

I make my own liquid soap by taking the little tail ends of bar soap and shaving them down with a miniature food grater.  Add some water in a pump bottle, and it becomes liquid soap overnight.  The little shavings liquify far better than just chunks of bar soap.  You can add scent or even alcohol if you like.

For household cleaning I have a "super solution" that's cheap  and very effective.

In a spray bottle, I use 90-95% water (the basic ingredient in almost all cleansers) a small amount of ordinary bleach, and some liquid soap.  This solution cleans, sanitizes, and deodorizes in one step.  Even better, I have learned that most insects hate it.  Before I started using it here, we had a problem with ants.  Since then, we rarely see an ant and never a roach.  In a tropical climate like we have here, that's amazing.

As you may have guessed, yes I did write a book about keeping house!

Never live beyond what you have if you have five dollars take half of that deposit half live off of the other 2.50 then you will have more.

When you have less you spend less... this world that I got to have it right away stinks, things do not go right when they are right now so the best way to do this is to do it later than never.

I feel that when I want to be less frugal is that everything that i eat in fruit has a pit, I save the pits make other little trees and have more fruit in due time. You got to see my back yard. its filled with all kinds of fruit trees and veggies nothing gets thrown away I recycle everything even chicken bones, they make great after washed hanging items in the trees, painted, we do not eat red meat or pork but everything gets recycled... so the cans make planters, the tops make clankers for the trees...milk jugs make water jugs... paper holds moisture for plants, boxes recycled., we use the tubes of toliet paper as extra paper to write with.

anything needs to be recyled does. nothing is left without it. pens when they are dried up put them in the microwave without the metal it will open up the ink heat it up a bit, becareful on this it does heat up fast.

so what elese you want to know about me?

Most of the things we buy are just *stuff*.  Often times, if not most times, we buy *stuff* we don't need, and nobody will every want.  AND.. worst of all, we'll have to either dust it, wash and iron it, or care for it.

De clutter, we don't need to buy *stuff*
