I suggest that you spend a little time looking at yourself and those things that you had put aside all your previous years in order to earn a living, raise children (and grandchildren, and re-raise children, by the way) and just get through each day.  Is there a skill you wanted to learn, but thought you never could or would be embarrassed that other people would know that you want to learn?  An example: at an Eldershostel I met a woman who was always fascinated by welding and iron working as an art form - she joined a class and made the most beautiful and delicate pieces of wrought iron imaginable.  Is there a musician who is active (concerts) who's work you enjoy?  Plan a trip that coincides with her/his concert schedule - plan ahead to stay in the area before or after a concert so you can 'see the sights'.  Plan to meet with other fans from other areas who are traveling the circuit.  Just a couple suggestions to jump start a new way of looking at and using your retirement time.

    Hi,

Do you have a "bucket list"?  See the movie "bucket list" if you don't have one yet.  England was on the top of my list....I've done it twice now.  First time, I toured London by myself, then caught a bus tour through the UK.  It was great!  My bus mate, was a lady from Hong Kong and my room mate was a lady from New Zealand.  We had fun!

The second time, I took my daughter and we stayed with some friends I had met earlier in Liverpool after touring London, they took us to Wales.

I plan to make other bus tours, you get to see so much more than the cruises.  The bus tour didn't charge extra if you went solo either.  I may do it for Hawaii too which is also on my list.  There's a website, "travelchums" that I've found a traveler in my city and we will go soon, as she's got a condo on the islands!

I love national parks too, so I've planned on working a few months of the year at the parks and go exploring the park on my time off, see website www.coolworks.com

The very best vacations have been unplanned road trips. We pick a part of the country .
We learn a little about it .Cities ,country stuff, natural sight seeing is our favorite.
Hit the road ,don't be in a hurry .You have years. Don't make reservations as something really great may pop up in some town and you'll stay there for a day or two.
Lodging is whatever you find or like. There is all expense levels everywhere..Often you find you find better food ,lodging, etc on your own then the preplanned tours..
Ask what is neat to see in an area. you'll get better info from locals than the standard sources..Don't be in a hurry , you don't have to back and you don't have to see it all.
Once on Maui on the road to Hanna we saw a guy never get out of his car .He'd stand up in his rental convertible and snap a pic drop back down and take off..Stop and smell the waterfall, grass ,whatever...Enjoy...We have found our own state,Texas, to have a lot to show us..If your budget is tight some times do your own state..amazing what is around ..
We have done this in foreign countries too. So much time ,so take your time.

Look at the Elderhostel web site.  Many, many options at home & overseas.  They are very enjoyable trips, interesting people and skilled leaders. I have loved everyone of my trips.  Many friends and neighbors have traveled with them as well.

We go somewhere once a month, sometimes just over night, longer trips a couple of times a year. We both like history so the historical places are must, plus they are such a learning experience. In October we are going to Memphis area so Bruce can take a ride in a B17. http://b17.org

Hubby wants hotel reservations ahead of time, I'd be happy choosing after we get somewhere. When we are traveling from place to place for several days we always stay at the same hotel chain because the beds will be the same, usually anyway. Now that I don't drive we have changed some of our ways, but not many. Oh, I forgot something, we stay at casinos a lot. Their rooms are always nice.
