Smoking Versus Drinking

I have always been puzzled why our society focuses more on smoking versus alcohol or both?  There are many hot topics, blogs and articles written concerning smoking, all over the internet-how bad it is for you, how hard it is to stop or how it can kill you but rarely anything mentioned about alcohol and drinking and the affects it has on health, family and that it can kill you or someone else. Drinking or smoking is everyone’s own choice but I have to ask the question. Is there is a double standard? We pass bills to eliminate smoking from establishments. Would we pass bills to eliminate drinking from them?

The fact that second and even third hand smoke is detrimental to the health of everyone around it, makes smoking more of an issue than drinking. Everyone in a public facility is subjected to the health risks perpetuated by a smoker. It is a fact that red wine is beneficial because it is full of antioxidants - like many red veggies or fruits. The problem, or safety issue, that results from drinking is caused by those that drink too much, then drive, thereby putting the public at risk. Health problems from excessive drinking? Absolutely can be............ but again, the drinker is not harming anyone other than their own body. Both smoking and excessive drinking can affect famillies - drinking can have huge emotional and economic effects - smoking can have those, as well as health effects on the other members of the family that live in proximity of the smoker. I see much support in the media and through support groups for both. I am a great supporter of a state-wide smoking ban because of the detriment that can occur to non-smokers. If smokers feel they have the right to smoke - great! But do it in a place that is not harmful to others. I think getting a drinking ban passed would be much more difficult because it is a different circumstance. While it would likely decrease the number of drunk driving deaths; how would it affect the business owner, and the people that drink responsibly?

As a former smoker for many years, I do not disagree that 2nd/3rd hand smoking can be detrimental to others. My question about banning smoking/drinking is just a hypothetical question to emphasize that we would show more support for banning smoking versus we would banning drinking from establishments. I have to ask though, if we can eat in a restaurant without smoking, couldn't we eat in a restaurant without drinking alcohol? This year we saw a huge cigarrette tax go into effect. It was on the news, in the media, etc. Everyone knew it was coming. It was broadcast everywhere. When is the last time that we saw a huge alcohol tax coming being broadcast on TV? We hear through ads and announcements that kids start smoking at an early age. What about drinking? I also agree that red wine has it's benefits. They say 1 glass for women and 2 for men a day is good but how good would it be for you if drank in excessive amounts? Great discussion.

Effects of smoking and drinking are dangerous to everyone. Not just bodybuilders, but smoking and drinking does not help a bodybuilder improve their inside or out. The habits both have severe and very dangerous consequences. Much better to quit. After two or three months, you will experience more stop smoking benefits. You will be much healthier. The lung will function much better and its functioning will increment by 30 percent.

Like smoking, alcohol is a very risky and dangerous habit. When I say alcohol I am talking about beer, wine, and liquor. Alcohol is a depressant which means it depresses the central nervous system. However it is now a stimulant. Alcohol acts a different way on everyone. The younger you are when you start, the harder it is to quit.
