..let's start off this "new group" with a discussion about "old groups." What great 50's & 60's groups do you remember most and why? Do you know if they are still performing? When was the last time you saw them? If you could wouyld you go see them again?
Okay, how about Danny and the Juniors? "At The Hop" was always a favorite. Anybody ever heard of Earl Lewis and the Channels? Their big hit was "The Closer You Are" and I think they still perform. There's always the sad story of Frankie Lyman, "Why Do Fools Fall In Love". He led a very unhappy life and died in 1968 from a drug overdose... DooWap was an interesting period... Strong enough that it still turns heads when people hear it done well live.
I have always loved rhythm and blues. Some of my favorites were Drifters, Temptations, Smokey Robinson, The Dells etc. My all time favorite was James Brown and I can still picture seeing him in concert. I will never forget it like when he put his cape on and fell to his knees and then would get back up just to do it all over again. The dancing of course was great. Great showman. Here I am today and still love rhythm and blues and the crooning of Luther Vandross. Both Luther and James Brown are no longer with us but their music lives on.
Well, I think I'll take you back a little further...The Four Freshmen were around in the mid 50's and although it's not the same 4 guys...they are still around. I just got to see and listen to them last week. The sounded wonderful. True, they are not DuWop but they were wonderful. I just returned from listening to a local So Cal group called The Alley Cats. They sing duwop from the 50's and every song they sing is great. You can find them at their own web site and on You Tube and Facebook and so on. It was a very enjoyable small time concert. Duwop was really "fun" music. I feel for today's kids.....wonder if any of the music they listen to that one can't understand the lyric will still be around 40 or 50 years from now?!
