About Me

Like most people meet in Florida, I am a transplant.  Unlike most people I meet in Florida, I am from upstate New York.  Though my wife and I may find ourselves living in cold weather again someday, I am ready move further south if I see snow on the ground in Orlando anytime soon.

     Hi Orangeman-

Just thought you might like to know that you are not the only Orangeman Architect from Beaver River Central School. (well, actually from grade school in the basement of the old Methodist Church building on the Beaverite Property) My father was the Methodist preacher there from 1947-52 and built the New Church up on DeWitt LeFevre's property along with Reginald Easton.

I taught at SU for a year in 1965, and the got my masters with Lou Kahn in Penn in 1966. Taught at UVA from 1975 to 85 and have been in the prefabricating of houses world wide ever since. I often wondered why I chose architecture, being a painter from Munson-Williams-Proctor in Utica (riding the back of my dad's motorcyle thru the snow drifts over Smith Hill from Newport, NY) until I recently found that my ancestors from Canjoharie, NY were Richard Elwood, Stone Mason to one Fort Klock, and Christian House, carpenter for another Fort Klock there.

How did I get my start? Building everything from rafts and treehouses on the Beaver River, to
building a clubhouse on top of the pier of the Lowville-Beaver River Railroad Trestle (by crawling between the ties down into the girder-box.) to creating caves in the pulp wood piles of JP Lewis Mill (?!!!?) with Bill Dalton,  to restacking Farmer Farney's cedar fence posts into a log cabin! (no cutting....)

Paid my way into SU with income from delivering the Carthage Tribune, gathering night-crawlers from the lawn in front of JP Lewis' house, and collecting scrap-metal from the
Beaver River bed below the dam when they drained it!

Hope to send a prototype to Haiti in the month ahead. Out of Florida? Best to you and yours.

I love that you are a Bachelor of Architecture.  Is that on your diploma?

Nice work on the profile, pal ... who's that cute girl in the pictures with you?

More About Me

Hometown

Lowville, New York

Family

My household (you may have seen a few pictures) consists of my wife Katy, two cats (Travers and Laila), and two dogs (Faegan and Junior).  As for the remainder of my family . . . my three younger brothers, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins . . . the majority of them live in the great white north of upstate New York.

Education

1998 - Beaver River Central School
2003 - Syracuse University (Bachelor of Architecture)
Today - still trying to connect all the dots

My Favorites

Interests

I am endlessly fascinated with food (I include wine and beer in that category), travel, and history among other things. When you cant reach me there is a fair chance that I am channel surfing between the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, the Travel Channel, and the Food Network.

Books

I don't do a lot of what one might call "reading" . . . especially lately (unless you count Architecture Exam Review Volumes I and II). If I were to list a favorite book here, I would be ridiculed by most who know me well (including the Mrs.).

Foods

Bring it on . . . I will try anything. I may not go back for seconds, but I will give it a go. If I had to choose a few things they would be the simple ones from my youth . . . things like Croghan bologna sandwiches with sharp cheddar, venison anything, cheese curd, and (though my wife laughs when I say it) New Bremen General Store subs. A gold star goes to those who can identify all of those items (except my family members on the site :)

Music

This one is tough to nail down. I was one in college who would bring both Tchaikovsky and Marilyn Manson cds with me to studio for the all nighters. Right now I have been listening to The Screaming Trees for at least the last month in my car (sorry honey). I guess one thing that is a constant is that I am generally not a fan of "top 40" music. To me, my taste in music all depends on the mood I am in at the time.

Movies

I will be the first to admit that I haven't seen as many movies as perhaps I should. Movies like Office Space, Reservoir Dogs, and Tombstone I will watch any time . . . even on cable. I have become a fan of horror movies . . . especially those of late such as the Saw series, Hostel, and Rob Zombies' movies (especially The Devil's Rejects). I also have a soft spot for movies like American Ninja and Army of Darkness.

Television

As mentioned, I will generally surf between the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, the Travel Channel, and the Food Network for my entertainment. Of course I also have a heavy dose of ESPN and other sports related programming. Throw in some gloriously crappy movies on the sci-fi channel, Family Guy, and the Simpsons and my day is complete.

Passions/Hobbies

Speaking in respect to my career, I think am still waiting to discover my real passion. However I love my wife and my furry children greatly so there is no day in my life that I should complain too much. I love to travel (and dream of travelling) . . . I only wish I could do it more often. I love good food and good friends/family . . . preferably together. Oh yeah . . . and I love playing video games new and old :)

Heroes

Heroes are a hard thing for me to define. No matter how I categorize that word with a definition, my father would be on my list. However much might I might joke with him, I have a great deal of respect for who he is as a person and how much he has done for me in my life. For that and other reasons I look up to him. Its seems that the only people that I would put in this category are those in my family that I know so well. Why look for heroes in people that I don't know when I have/had grandparents and uncles and aunts and siblings and cousins whom are such great people? I owe much of who and what I am today to them and thank them for that.
