Question

Have You Attended Any RHS International or Regional Conventions?

Tell us about any official Red Hat Society international or regional conventions you've attended, or any future conventions for which you are currently registered.

    Question

My friends and I had attended a regional convention in Tacoma, WA and decided it was time to get to an "official" convention so off we went to Palm Springs last December.
Talk about a shopping mecca. The vendors were fantastic and some of the prices were wonderful. The RHS store was huge but the pins we'd wanted weren't there and they weren't interested in getting some during the event. Follow-up later fell through when they didn't get back to me or respond to my emails and phone calls. They did call once and said they would call me back but it's almost a year later and I long ago gave up. I'll support the vendors!
The convention is expensive for what was offered. Entertainment was almost non-existent but not a problem as we had fun in the bar meeting everyone.
We attended the premier of Bonneville and I think it is an awesome movie and if you've not seen it - do! I saw it again a few months later at the unveiling in Scottsdale and have bought a few copies of the DVD to use as gifts.
The Palm Springs Follies was an incredible show that we all saw. Unfortunately, it was raining and the RHS hadn't arranged for nearly enough buses for everyone.
The tours were a disappointment but we put together our own group and went off to the cable car up the mountain into the cold and snow!!! Spectacular.
All in all, the RHS event was so-so but we all just made our own fun. Isn't that what red hatting is all about?
Most we heard from said they much prefer the smaller regional events and would not spend the money again for an official RHS event.
So, we're off nect weekend to a convention in Spokane!

    Question

I have not attend a National Convention, nor will I.  I had thought about going to the Gaylord in Grapevine, Texas next year as it is in my backyard and there would be no airfare involved.  However, after seeing the $400 registration fee, $180/nite hotel rate, and $12/day parking fee, I decided I could attend SEVERAL smaller events (even regional) for that kind of money.

I am in 2 other organizations besides the RHS and I attend their conventions almost every year.  Their registration fees are always around $200 (with all meals covered) and the hotels are rarely over $130, plus I don't recall ever paying for parking.  One of these organizations I've been in for over 20 years and the other 4 years.  So, it's hard for me to justify spending that kind of money for what I would be getting at a RHS National Convention.

    Question

I understand your feelings and I hear that same thought many times.
    The RHS are way overpriced.
Before we did our convention we did a cost analysis of several conventions and the RHS cost is almost twice the price of others if not higher with offering way less.
I prefer the smaller conventions too!

    Question

Eleven of the 12 members of my original chapter attended the first Nashville convention. I think it was in 2003. It was our first convention of any kind and we loved every minute of it. I met Red Hat members for the first time that I still correspond with. All of my other conventions have been small week-end events planned and hosted by individual chapters. There is an excellent one held every other year in Edgewood MD by theFrolicking Friends of Fallston. My chapter in partner with another group will be hosting our third annual Red Hat Mardi Gras in February 2009. I went to one in WV the end of September and had a ball. I prefer the smaller events...500 or less.

Even though I loved the National my purse doesn't allow for that kind of expense since I now have retired.
