Now that we're finally back to a non-strike TV schedule, what shows are you watching this year? Are there any that you used to watch that you've since given up? Any new shows you're excited about?
Here's what I've been watching:
Amazing Race 13: I love this reality show. I really do. It doesn't quite scratch my own travel itch, but it certainly gives me good ideas for my world travel wish list. I was disappointed to see the hippie bee keepers go so quickly (now they were definitely Growing Bolder!), but I always love the intergenerational teams. Last year, I was a big fan of the grandfather/grandson team who got matching tattoos during one of the detours. This year, I'm starting to develop a little nerd crush on the computer geeks. They're great!
How I Met Your Mother: There aren't many good sitcoms on anymore, but this is definitely at the top of the list for me. It's one of the truest shows I've ever seen about what it's like to be in your 20s and early 30s. The dialogue often seems like it was lifted from conversations between me and my friends, although we do not have a Barney in the group! I wish though! Neil Patrick Harris is amazing in this role! He was made to do physical comedy.
Brothers & Sisters/Desperate Housewives: These aren't the must-see shows they once were for me, although I still find myself DVRing them. I still rather enjoy Brothers and Sisters, but I'm not giving DH much longer. We'll see how this whole 5-year flash-forward technique pans out.
Project Runway: This is the highlight of my TV week. We're nearing the end of the season, but the best part of that is that that means Top Chef is almost here!
The Office: I loved the first episode with the officewide weight-loss challenge. I laughed out loud this summer when I heard about that premise, and it didn't fail to disappoint. And I love how they have made Ryan come back as the temp again. I just hope that the engagement of Jim and Pam doesn't turn this great dark comedy into a sappy love show!
Looking forward to the return of LOST. Can't wait to see how they return to an island that doesn't "really exist" (or does it) and it's now "moved" and no one knows where? Other favorites this season: All the CSIs, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Criminal Minds, Numbers, Prison Break, Ugly Betty, Bones, House ... etc... Also excited about the season return of Damages, Saving Grace, and The Closer. Oh, and the new hit on ABC Family, The Secret Life of the American Teenager.
Those new Lost ads have made me really excited. But first, we have Damages this week! Can't wait. Although I feel like I need a refresher -- that show is so complicated! The New York Times ran a great feature on the show yesterday. Check it out:
Totally excited about Lost returning, cautiously interested in the return of 24. The 5th season was the pinnacle, and the 6th was flat-out weak. They just skipped last year because of the writers' strike, which gives me hope that they had time to refine their game plan for 2009.
A couple of weeks ago, Season 3 of Dexter just completed on Showtime. It should immediately be the front-runner for Best Drama at the Emmy Awards this fall, IMHO.
I am also curious to see how the movement of Scrubs from NBC to ABC works. The creator of the show said he now cares about ratings for the first time ever, because he wants to hurt NBC for dumping the show.
I've been a devoted viewer of House since the beginning, but it's starting to lose its punch for me. I hope this is temporary, as I was an early champion of the show before it became huge. I did like the "Usual Suspects" joke recently snuck in there as a poke at Brian Singer, the EP of the show, and director of the movie. I'm digging "Fringe," it is one of the few shows my wife and I watch on the night it airs. I hope it continues to gather momentum.
Besides football (which I love), there is nearly nothing else to watch on the tube right now. I've been spending more time with my Blu-rays (Wall-E, Godfather II) and DVDs, as well as watching TCM and classic flicks on HDNet. I DVR'd a nice looking HD broadcast of "The Outlaw Josey Wales." I can't wait.
Hey Fox network, I know it's been 3 years, but I still can't forgive you for cancelling Arrested Development. You've made a huge mistake.
