What's the best show of all time?

Question

What's the best show of all time?

Everyone's got their favorite show of all time.  There are some that I personally love (i.e. 90210, sorry, but it's true!) but I acknowledge that they aren't exactly great shows. If I had to pick my top five in terms of greatness, they'd be the following:

5. Seinfeld.  What can I say? Despite the fact that I've seen every episode several times, I still laugh every time I watch one. I think that's the sign of a truly great show -- not only does it survive multiple viewings, it actually gets better.
4. Six Feet Under -- This would be higher on my list if it weren't for a couple of disappointing seasons toward the end, but when it was good, it was so good. And who knew funeral directors could be so interesting? To me, it was one of the truest shows on TV when it came to family relations.
3. The Sopranos: Ditto goes for Sopranos in terms of a strong start but a disappointing middle.  And all those mini-seasons really ruined the flow of this series. But David Chase and co. won me back until it came to that $*&! fade-to-black ending.  That still infuriates me!
2. Lost: Just when I think I'm about over this show, it hooks me back in with new mysteries! I can't wait for this season!!
1. ... The Wire!  In five seasons, this HBO drama about cops and drug dealers in Baltimore never failed me.  How the Emmy Awards never acknowledged this groundbreaking series, I'll never know. I am happy to see these strong actors turning up in new roles though ... even on the new 90210!!

Honorable mention also goes to the Simpsons (my dog is named Homer, after all!).  If I was just ranking greatest TV families, this would be near or at the top.  Plus, the writers don't get nearly as much credit as they deserve.  Everyone's always talking about how smart the Lost and Mad Men writers are, but I am constantly amazed at how The Simpsons writers can craft scripts with so many different meanings for so many different people.

So, what's in your top 5? Have at me ... I can take the arguments for or against mine!

    Question

    Jackie,

Great topic!  There are so many shows that I have loved over the years that it's hard to narrow it down.  My favorite from childhood is probably Square One, which was on PBS:

    The theme song rocks!

    Question

Hooked on LOST. My daughter got me started on this series.

Many of the writers of Alias  are behind this series (which was another of my favorites). Have DVDs of all the episodes right from the beginning. Season 5 just concluded.

I will tell you that it is difficult if not impossible to follow unless you have been with it for some time, know the history and relationship of all the characters. Sometime it is necessary to go back to previous episodes and rewatch them to "get it". it is like an ongoing jigsaw puzzle. I wonder if the writers make this up as they go along?

Far fetched to the max which is why I like it. Intriguing if you "get it" (or think you get it ) and always ends with a "How did that happen" cliffhanger.

I guess you are either a lost Junkie or clueless and hate the show. Has quite a following.

    Question

If I had to go back. The Original Hollywood Squares would have to be right at the top.

Unscripted stuff, one liners to dumb-loaded questions. Absolutely hilarious and truly pushed the censorship edge during that era. What a cast! Most are gone now.

Carrol Burnett, Red Skelton also favs.

    Question

Conis -- aren't DVDs of shows one of the best inventions?? There are so many shows that I missed in their original run -- The Shield, Dexter, etc -- that I've been able to catch up thanks to DVDs.  Plus, I get to fly through a season in a just a couple weeks!

So, since my first post, I would like to add the two aforementioned shows to my list.  If you haven't checked them out yet, you must! I also just finished the first season of "True Blood" last night. Dang HBO for sucking me in (ha, get it?) into another series. Now I just have to decide if I can wait for season two, which is just premiered on HBO a couple weeks ago, to come out on dvd or if i'm going to have to order hbo for a couple of months to get my vampire fix!

    Question

Really... I am not a big TV junkie. Have a dish and my favorites... I like the sci fi  stuff. X files, Alias, Lost. Stuff well written that , at the end, make you say "Hmmmmmm...." Don't want to miss next week, do we?

I don't recall what channel it was on. Fox maybe, and this was 20 years ago. A show called "Werewolf". Friday night, 8pm... big bowl of popcorn...My 5 year old daughter and I would double up in the lazy boy to watch "The Bad Doggie Show". Pretty lame as far as I was concerned but she considered it entertaining. Just a bad doggy show...Even at age 5, it was just entertainment and no ill effects. Shes a hard core dog lover!

    Question

Having the DVDs is a big help, especially with a show like LOST. Nice to go back a couple episodes since there are so many subtle clues that can easily be missed.

I also prefer watching LOST on line (abc.com).  The commercials in the broadcast version destroy continuity. On line, you can back up the video a few minutes and re watch any parts that seem confusing.
