About Me

I am a 63 year old retired nurse who is in the planning stage for the next phase of my life. I was a very happy stay-at-home mom while raising my family....became a nurse at fifty-one....divorced seven years ago and began traveling. I've nursed in Alaska and New Zealand and was enchanted by both places. I was in Winter Garden, Florida helping a cousin during an illness when I heard of Growing Bolder and joined right away. I enjoy dancing, hiking, biking, gardening, swimming, reading and listening to selected classical music.

My Latest Blog

  • Biking New Zealand

I'm having such an incredible time that I had to write my first blog! Having worked in the north island of New Zealand for a year, I saw the sights there (lovely)....but what about the south island? I'm retired now and at 65 I have the time....and still...

Jackie....You're on....I would love to be your friend!  You are actually the first "real" (other than "boomer", etc.) contact I've had on this site.  But then I don't spend much time in front of the computer.  I finally joined Facebook out of self defense....all of my friends were on it.

Why don't we have lunch sometime?  But it will have to be soon....I'm headed back to Texas Sept 1st and then to New Zealand Sept 15th.  This is my dream trip....I'll be staying until April next year.

Are you anywhere near Winter Garden?  Henri Etta

WOW!! YOU'RE SOME KIND OF ROLE MODEL!  LOVE WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT NOT HARMING THE LAND AND LIVING SIMPLY.  TO BECOME A NURSE AT 51 SHOWS A LOT OF DETERMINATION AND ACTUALLY, THOUGHT.  KNOW NEW ZEALAND IS LOVELY ....ONLY BECAUSE I SAW MY DAUTHTER'S HONEYMOON PHOTOS.  THAT'S ONE PLACE I WANT TO VISIT.  DID GET TO LIVE OVERSEAS TEACHING FOR 7 YR.....TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THAT.  I ALSO LIKE VIVALDI AND ESP. LOVE TO DANCE.  MUSIC JUMP-STARTS ME.  HOW ABOUT BEING MY FRIEND?

More About Me

Hometown

Mineola, Texas

Family

My father was a pilot in WWII and crashed in North Africa just before I was born. By all accounts he was a lovely person....wish I could have known him. My mother is in a nursing home with Alzheimers. I have three daughters, one son, and eleven grandchildren.

Education

I married young after only a year of college.....went back after raising my family and received an AD in Nursing when I was fifty-one.

Goals

First of all...whatever I do....I hope to have the least possible impact on the environment. I intend to continue educating myself....informally and formally.

People I'd like to meet

Stephen Hawking Annie Dillard Jacque Cousteau (too late now) My father (also too late) My "soulmate"

My Favorites

Interests

Living simply (I've been down-sizing for many years and live in the bunkhouse behind my daughter's home). Maintaining health through diet and exercise. Gardening....I dream of one day being able to live off of the produce from my garden....a real "dream" here in East Texas!

Books

"The Universe in a Nutshell"....or anything by Hawking. All of Dickens' books "Teaching a Stone to Talk" by Annie Dillard "Walden Pond" The "All Creatures Great and Small" series by Herriott

Foods

Oatmeal with blueberries, flaxseed, wheat germ and walnuts (every morning) Just about anything with spinach in it! Pickled beets and cottage cheese....YUMMY Home made German bread.....lots of seeds. DARK CHOCOLATE.....MY PASSION.

Music

I've always loved Big Band music, some Rock....and more recently was introduced to classical. Was given a personal compilation of relaxing classicals that mezmerised me.....the only title I know is "La Lune". Also have learned that I enjoy Vivaldi.

Movies

Old Classics like "The African Queen"....comedies like "Arsenic and Old Lace" I delighted in another, although obscure, oldie that I caught on TCM one night...."A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". Loved "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Fiddler on the Roof"

Television

I haven't actually owned a TV since divorcing....but when exposed I gravitate towards educational shows or PBS. I'm allergic to "canned" laughter and commercials. When I had a TV I was addicted to TCM....but then resented the time spent watching....would rather be active.

Passions/Hobbies

Passions.....first and foremost.....dancing (especially ballroom; but I'm happy moving to any kind of music). Also love to swim....not fast....I'd rather reach and stretch and luxuriate in the feeling of moving through water. If there's music playing I'll swim to the beat. Hobbies are gardening and cooking.

Heroes

Henry David Thoreau Stephen Hawking My father
