My back road tours are usually dirt roads but occasionally I get lucky and a friend will envite me along for some Harley Crusin'. One of my favorites is South on Hwy. 89 out of Richfield, Ut and then turn east on Highway 12, following it through Bryce Canyon, then on to Escalante, over Boulder Mountain to Torrey, Ut, with a short side trip to Capitol Reef National Park and then a cruise back to Richfield via Hwy 24, then North on Hwy. 72 and 25 to Fish Lake, then back to Richfield. Incredible country and the best part is no traffic. When you spend most of your time in California, the idea of riding somewhere with no traffic is but a dream.
I'm very envious of your mode of travel. Many years ago saw me cruising the country behind my ex on a Harley but then motherhood kept me busy at home. Finally he got custody of the Harley & I got the kids. Of course, I know I got the best part of that whole deal, but sometimes my ears still perk up when I get passed on the highway by one or more bikes and my heart speeds up just a little & I remember how the wind used to feel in my face. Anyway, reading your description of your road trip on Highway 12 in Utah was like watching an old, much loved movie in my mind! Been there, done that! Thank you bunches for posting! Recently I had the opportunity to drive Highway 12 across Montana - I highly recommend it for your future consideration! Very different from Utah, but amazingly beautiful just the same and best of all, NO TRAFFIC! It's a strange yet wonderful feeling when you can drive 100 miles or more and never encounter another vehicle. In five hours of driving I only saw one other car - driven by another woman travelling alone & we finally realized we were taking the same rest stops (there aren't many available!) so we sat & chatted awhile. Your posting has me toying with the idea of getting a bike of my own & heading out to find some new backroads - wouldn't THAT give the grandkids cause for pause? LOL!
It gave my grandkids lots of pause, but now they seem to brag about gramma annie. I will file highway 12 in montana away for future reference. There are just so many great places in this country.
