Amelia Earhart becomes the first woman to fly nonstop across the US, doing it in 19 hours.  In 1937, as she nears her 40th birthday, she will began her trip as the first woman to fly around the world.  

Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams is born in San Diego. Williams will hit a home run during his final game in 1960 at the age of 42.
