sherisaid: As a good mom you should warn your son about that marketing career. Before he died Dante was going to add one more level into his Divine Comedy. It was for all marketing people and it was a level to be covered over completely by Mardi Gras puke and cow dung. And even that is too good for them.

As this country develops an after recession New economy, marketing is going to be a feast or famine career. It already is to many. Digital media will become the marketing push. You son should learn how to write for the digital marketing media. There is a specialty in writing Twitter like bits that will lead to a greater response rate.

Besides, marketing is primarily for a economy with disposable income. As disposable incomes go down, and they are and will continue to do so, needs based marketing will become the focus. Suggest that he get a DVD of Max Headroom. Compare it to today. The global corporations are already doing a Max Headroom. Notice the soundbite marketing. The real time analysis. Market cycles are getting shorter and shorter.

The new market success stories are going to be based on who you know more than what you know. The self-made success will become a rarity. Government regulations and big business in bed with government will make it difficult for the little guy. It has been getting worse for the last 30 years.

Healthcare has gotten out of control due to regulations, lack of tort reform, and the marketing of healthcare to the emotional demands of the consumer. The John Edwards of the world will push all but government health workers to the poor house with malpractice expenses.

Everybody says, Fix healthcare malpractice abuse but let me still sue my doctor when I feel injured. Just stop the other guy from suing.

Your son's generation is the most marketable market. They are so easily influenced by social movements and pressures. The wealth is in the over 55 set but the marketing is aimed at the under 35 set. Go figure.

If your son had/has a job, why didn't he buy his own health plan? They are rather cheap for young people. My daughter only paid $85 per month for her Blue Cross.

Maybe his generation needs to be marketed better by the heath care insurance industry.

Mark, plans he can afford don't cover anything. I went to BCBS and looked up plans. I don't know what it costs to go to the doctor in Idaho - or wherever your daughter lives - but the typical doctor visit here is roughly $200 plus charges for everything. The various BCBS plans for $80 a month cover a maximum of $50. So if you go to the doctor once a year, you will pay $1,110.00 for the privilege, plus tests and medication. My daughter hasn't seen a doctor in 4 years, aside from a centra-care visit for an infected insect bite. So her total for that single visit would have been in the $3,800 range. If the visit were even covered. These plans include no dental, no visual, no mental health. All of which is covered by my insurance.

So the answer to why my son (and daughter) don't get individual insurance: it's useless.

About marketing, there's always going to be a market for marketers, but I'm not sure that's what he'll wind up doing. Like most college students, he'll start with one idea and change course many times before settling in a specific direction. I am encouraging him because whatever he winds up doing - we all start with the basics. Step one is just getting into school. After that, we'll work on exploring directions.

You must not have any good network or PPO plans in Florida. Plus, your doctors are outrageous. My wife had a walnut sized cyst removed from her back and the total charge to us was less than $700. She was in the surgical treatment room for over two hours. It was less than the annual deductible so after her next visit, her deductible will be met. Even with the $5000 deductible policy she had last year, the fee discounts arranged by BCBS made the net costs about 40% less than billed. She had a PPO office visit provision that kept simple office visits at $30 copay.

So, who is paying the extra premium for your family plan? Is it the employer or is there a payroll deduction?

I checked out the BCBS plans for Gainsville area for an example, not a lot different than Idaho. Your network system is not as good. Keep in mind, health insurance is not just for office visits. It covers catastrophic problems too. Isn't the catastrophic coverage worth something? Putting the deductible in a MSA can help too.

Choices have to be made. Nothing is free. In fact, those things that appear to be free cost the most.

Mu hub works for UPS. Our coverage is comprehensive and free, although we have a deductible and copays...and it seems they cover fewer services, like tests and such, every year. But before you blame Obamacare, this all started long before he was elected. The decline in care goes back several years. Even in what seems like an expensive decline, we are better off than most.

Florida is an expensive state for doctors. There was a lot of press a few years ago about the cost of malpractice insurance driving doctors out of state. In addition, space is a premium. Leasing an office anywhere near me must cost a small fortune. Gainesville is the backwoods compared to the Orlando area. I live in a city where the median income is about $90k. The median income in Gainesville is $31k.

I agree that insurance is a choice one must consider carefully. Here's something to think about. We have fairly comprehensive vision care. However, my discount id off the full suggested retail price. So if I walked in without insurance, and got glasses at the sale price, I could walk out with the exact glasses I have (progressive lenses, non-glare for computer work, scratch resistant, lightweight poly) for about $250. There's always a sale. I paid about $210, because they took my discounts off the full price.  Big whoop.

Moral of the story: insurance is a ripoff, one way or another. That's one of the things President Obama is trying to change. He may not be able to accomplish it, since so many people misunderstand his intent...or simply throw fits about change because they are afraid. Compromise is not always a good thing...and we'll all know soon enough when schools start going out of business, roads crumble and libraries close in states run by idiots like our governor, Rick Scott, who was found guilty of (get this) health care fraud.

Substantiate your empty claim that insurance is a rip-off.

If you think that is so, then you should be able to self-insure for less money. Or do you mean it is a rip-off because the corporate big wigs make too much money.

The rates for Orlando are not much higher than Gainesville.

All of the things O wants to do will do just the opposite of his spoken intentions. In reality, he wants to collapse the private insurance companies so that we will have to start a government run system, like MediCare and Medicaid. Just like he wants to triple the cost of electricity. He thinks this will force people to be more energy conscious. Yes, after they riot in the streets and march on Washington. Their energy consciousness will be because they are burning wood to cook their food in the homeless encampments. They will have little use for electricity.

It is only right that the UPS slaves get some benefits. UPS is quite abusive of their employees. The few that make it to management have it made compared to the abused line workers, sorters and delivery persons. I know plenty of ex UPS employees. UPS is going after the workers at FedEx as a way to improve their competitiveness.  The FedEx workers like their jobs without UPS's interference.

One person I know worked lousy shifts for years to qualify for a promotion. He finally got the promotion and was fired within six months. Here in Idaho, the Mormons run the show. Unless you are a Mormon, you get the lowest jobs if any at all.

I believe I have substantiated my claims that insurance is a ripoff. In the last few posts, I have given you several examples of how much more you pay if your insurance stinks. As to self-insuring, since I don't pay for the insurance and wouldn't get any benefit, that wouldn't really make mush sense, now would it?

The insurance rates for Gainesville may not be substantially different, but doctors charge more. I thought I made that clear when I talked about the cost of doing business in a metro area like Orlando. If the insurance covers the same and doctor visits/tests cost more, the net result is more out of pocket for the patient.

You're spouting rhetoric again. Show me the sources of this deep paranoia about what Obama really wants to do as opposed to what he says he wants to do. If you think he wants to triple energy costs, you don't have a clue what Dems are all about and you're running on unfounded conspiracy theory. If you have a legitimate source for this info, let's see it.

UPS does not abuse its employees. They are expected to work hard and are well compensated for it. You may know ex-UPS employees, but I know dozens of current employees. Moving into management sucks. Middle managers are not protected by the union, so they get longer hours, less pay (per hour because they are salaried) and more abuse from upper management because they have no protection. Few people survive UPS middle management. It's a very stressful job. My husband has been a driver for more than 25 years, and he's only in the middle of the seniority list. Unlike most slaves, UPS drivers make about 30 bucks an hour and get 6 weeks paid vacation. Plus the benefits package including pension, stock, 401k, insurance, etc. Perhaps you should look up the definition of slave.
