What's your take on spanking?

Right on, Addie Smith. We learned in child psychology from Dr.Palermo at California U that if parents don't frustrate their child's bad behavior at home then the world will frustrate their children when those same kids act up outside the home. I spanked my child when she misbehaved, but, because I started disciplining her right from the the crib, it didn't take long for her to learn that I wanted her to grow up in the right way. She is now 37 and a detective and doing quite well. A couple years ago she told me she had been sitting around with some of her girlfriends and they were  discussing their parents. She told me that she had stated that her friends were surprised to learn that I was a hard-ass parent, since she and I get along so well. I was surprised myself to hear her describe me as a tough parent, but, then I recovered and asked her, "Well, aren't you glad I was?" and she answered emphatically, "Yes". I f you take the time to discipline a child and not worry about the goofball hand-wringers who say spanking can be, among other things, a form of sexual abuse (LOL), you can get the child's attention real quick. And, after the spanking, if you tell them you love them, while you still have their attention, you go a long way to developing that kid into an emotionally healthy and mentally strong and confident person.

There is a big difference between physical abuse and a swat on the rear, when a toddler is acting up in the public sector--however; I do notice that people are even afraid to do this anymore for fear of being reported--so, in this case I guess removing the child immediately from the scene--taking them home would be the most logical conclusion.

Every kid who does wrong needs a good swift kick in the pants, We did not turn out to be serial killers nor did we become unruly kids, but sometimes you need to smack th pants out of those kids, they deserve it for they test us.

I am a parapsycologist, and i have some clients who just sit there when thier kids run around my office and they look at them with the evil eye. they the kids test the parents. how far will they go. When they see me and say Midnight, you are ugly or this and that. I say to them, look deep into my eyes then they stop.

MY eyes are deep black, and it calms them, there parents have no idea what there kids are up to in my office but that is my real name midnight so they call me good night midnight

    Fascinating discussion!

The incident which precipitated this conversation appears to be assault and battery.....the threat of making physical attack and then actually doing it....to that child.

What caused the child to become/remain unruly could be the direct result of a lack of discipline on the parent's part....but that has nothing to do with whether or not spanking is a viable form of discipline. And certainly nothing whatsoever to do with that man touching that child with violence.

Any effective form of discipline is generally derived from a knowledge of cause and effect...action and reaction.....action and consequences which are taught to a child in terms appropriate to their age and intelletual and emotional status.

Linda, a parapsychologist?  You are a woman of unending experience!  Fascinating!

A spanking sometimes becomes necessary to establish boundaries to a defiant child. If used properly,(never in anger) it doesn't have to be repeated A stranger never has a right to do it. Had the man hit one of my kids he would have gotten one from me right there in the store.

I am all for corporal punishment. For any ages, not just kids. I think adults need to be paddled too. I think that it is a great idea of using corporal punishment instead of jail time. Our jails are too full for minor offenses. And the cost is too great. Have you ever heard of the Robo Spanker? You are strapped down on this table, and it paddles you for 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes are up it releases you. By that time your butt stings real bad and you will be thinking twice before doing something stupid again. What a perfect idea. I was paddled a few times as a kid. I never had a broken bone or sent to a hospital. I did however have a few bruises and a bottom to wear I couldn't sit down for awhile. But each time I did sit, it got me thinking of doing right instead of wrong. Now, I am all for this corporal punishment thing but only for misdeanor offenses. Let me know what you think on this. email silvermedalgirl@yahoo.com
