Why Laugh?

People don't stop playing because we go old, we grow old because we stop playing!!Some people think that laughter is for kids and in order to grow up you have to grim up.  But, studies  show that laughter improves our health in many ways.  Laughing improves or blood pressure, blood sugar, immume function and helps depression and memory and even if laughing didn't have any health benefits, a life with laughter is a whole lot more enjoyable than one without it.

I'm a member of the Learning in Retirement group at a community college in my area.  On September 18, 2009 we will have a "Laugh-a-Yoga" session.  The class description appears below:

    Laugh-a-Yoga CRN: 3363

We’ve all heard, “Laughter is the best medicine.” And it is! Many medical studies have proven the health benefits of laughter. Not surprising. But isn’t it interesting that even “fake” laughter has been proven to be almost as beneficial as the real thing. When we laugh for no reason, we find plenty of reasons to laugh. Fake it until you make it!

This workshop will include lots of laughs, and we will be sitting comfortably on chairs (or the floor if you prefer) and walking around, very relaxed and happy! Students may wish to bring a mat or a blanket to lie down and do some relaxation at the end of the class.

Presenter: Lois Dapsis was trained as a Laugh-a-Yoga teacher at the Integral Yoga Institute in Virginia, and she was given a License to Laugh by Bharata Wingham, founder of Laugh-a-Yoga.

That's awesome.  I'm a recently Certified Laughter Leader trained by the World Laughter Tour.  I'm very excited by the concept of people getting together for the sole purpose of laughing.  In this stressful world, we can all benefit from  bringing more joy into our lives.  As I embark on my new endevour, it's my hope to spread a little sunshine!

I attended a class at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando a couple of years ago that dealt with laughter, humor and healing. It was an hour and half of pure fun. We did all sorts of silly stuff... from creating funny hats to making silly sounds with various items. Whatever we did, it was all designed to make us laugh. And, we learned that there are different types of laughter -- the best being the all-time belly laugh.

These classes are still available and I highly recommend them. As a cancer survivor, I'm a huge believer in the power of laugher, humor and healing. No matter how difficult it has been, I have found humor an important tool in my box of tricks. After major lung surgery, I told my children to make sure I watched a funny movie or TV show every single day while recovering. It was not easy; I could hardly breath after watching some of the funny stuff my kids found for me to watch. But, the power of laugher proved to be a great medication - a true source of power to get better and stronger.

Laughter is good medicine. Try it!

I love the concept of this group. I totally believe in the many benefits of laughter. I look forward to seeing what this group can produce to benefit us and others.  I really am impressed with being a Certified Laughter instructor. I'd like to hear more about that.  Just today, I started a blog on this site that I think I will title Witticisms with a Message.  I am anxious to see what my writing endeavors will produce for me.

    Hi Norma,
Thanks for your interest in being a laughter leader.  This is all very new to me.  I completed a continuing education course through the World Laughter Tour last month and I have my first gig on October 15th at a senior housing facility in my town here in New Jersey.  I'm really excited about doing this.  Did you know that children laugh on average, 400 times a day, sadly adults just 14.  We really need to lighten up.  Bob Hope said on his 95th birthday, "laughter is like taking an instant vacation."  It obviously worked for him to have lived such a long and productive life. Thankfully, laughter leaders do not need to be stand up comedians.  Laughter is acheived by doing simulated laughter exercises.  It's such fun that a lot of spontaneous mirthful laughter erupts and fortunately simulated or spontaneous our bodies benefit either way.  We can improve our blood pressure, blood sugar, immune function, healing, mood, memory and lots more.  Even if laughter didn't have any health benefits, a life with laughter is a lot happier than one without.  Remember, laughter is contageous, let's start an epidemic!!!  I look forward to hearing more from you.  It's my pleasure to have such distinguished friends as you and your husband.  Do you still live in Texas?  I lived in Dallas for a spell back in the 70's,  All the best, Shirl aka laughter lady.

I DON'T SEE WHY YOU THINK I AM NORMA STRAIT. I have reread my writings and do not see what I said to make it seem so.  Maybe you WANT me to be her.  But.....Norma is 10 years younger than I am AND beautiful!!!  The photo of her dear hubby and I was taken in Richmond, VA, 2008, during a Meet and Greet at George's concert.  Come to think of it, though........I WISH I were Norma......but, that's another story.

Oh. My name is Gayle Snyder and I reside in Williamsburg, VA.  I hope you still want to like me even tho I am not famous or rich or beautiful or young....and so much more.......BUT........I LOVE TO LAUGH!!!

Oops,  my apology, Gayle.  I guess I'd better read more carefully!!  Of course, I'm delighted to be your friend and I'm thrilled that you're interested in my new endevour.  As the saying goes, laughter is the best medicine.  I hope you'll just laugh my confusion away, the laughs on me!!  I   do have to say, that you and George look like a handsome couple though! You could have fooled me.   If you have any questions about laughter clubs, I'll try to answer them.  Have a great week-end.  Shirl
