About Me

Well, I'm here!  A little over two years ago, I was looking for that elusive 'something' that would bring me personal satisfaction. I had no idea where to look, or even what it might be.  One day, I found it, but was actually afraid to seek it out!  'It' is a Volunteer organization that serves the low-income people of (mostly) Eastern KY.  I toyed with the idea for two years, thinking it was something I'd do when I retired. The pull grew stronger, though, and I was also realizing I may never be able to afford to retire!  What then?  Never follow my heart and come here to do what I believe is my destiny?  That wasn't smart!  Soooo, about two months ago, I took the big step and filled out the paperwork-LOTS of paperwork-and started the process that would bring me here.

Last week, I came up for a 3 day visit, to go through the interviews, and to check out some of the programs. There were two I was interested in, but I ended up choosing something completely different!. Going back home, I tried to stay positive, but it's like a job interview, and no matter how well you may think you did, there's always that question in the back of your mind...did I stick my foot in my mouth?

On Labor Day, I got the call that they wanted me to join them!  WOW! I was so happy, excited, scared, and relieved! I packed my belongings and started loading my car that day!  Not scheduled to arrive until Saturday, I just couldn't wait, and ended up getting here on Thursday.

I feel so blessed to have found this place, and I'm excited about meeting the people I'll be providing assistance for. I'm so glad I didn't wait till retirement to do this!

I'm in the Volunteer house where I'll be living for the next year, and today starts a week-long Orientation! I can't tell you how excited I am, and what a blessing this has been/will be. I'm looking at this new beginning as sort of a personal retreat, a...

Family

My two children are grown, with children of their own.  Jenn is turning 40 in October, and her boys are 19 and 12. Greg will be 35 later this month, and his two are 9 and 7, with a new baby due in October.  That'll make 5 grandsons! Everyone's healthy and happy, which in turn makes me happy!

Education

It took me awhile to finish college.  Thinking I already knew everything, I ran off and got married at the end of my first year of college.  After having my kids, I started working on getting the education I missed, and I graduated with a BS from Indiana University in 1987, just before turning 37. Some fond memories from those last couple of years included sitting at the dining room table, doing homework with my kids.

Goals

I've always admired people like Jimmy Carter, Mother Teresa, and just the people in a neighborhood who make a difference.  I used to think I couldn't do that, because I didn't have the money, the time, the smarts, but I realized those were just excuses I was throwing in my own way. I wanted to help others, plain and simple.  I've looked for a little over two years now to find the right place for me, and I believe I've found it here.

People I'd like to meet

Right now, I'd love to meet more of the people in this organization. I think they're remarkable, and those I've already met have such a passion for the work we do here.  I want to learn how to help, and then DO IT.
