The $100,000 conversation

The cost of college is over the moon these days – about $50,000 a year at private schools, I’m told. I thought it was expensive when we were paying for our daughter at $25,000 a year, but I learned in one phone call that it was all worth it. I call it the $100,000 conversation.

Nikki had gone to three schools in three years and was determined to get out in four. She was going to summer school – studying in Greece. Nine o’clock one Saturday night the phone rang.

“Hi, Dad, I’m at a pay phone.”

I did the math. Nine o’clock here, six a.m. Sunday in Greece.

“Are you all right? Is everything okay?”

“Sure, why?”

“Because you’re calling at six a.m. on a Sunday from a pay phone.”

“Oh yeah, we just got back.”

“Just got back from where?”

“The disco on the other side of the island.”

“You’re just getting home from the disco at six a.m.?”

“Sorry, Dad, I’m out of money, got to go. Love you.”

I knew then it was money well spent because Nikki had learned to think on her feet and she wasn’t letting her studies get in the way of her education.
