WMKVSHOW 2-18-13

Hello again. This is Alice Hornbaker for WMKV 89.3 FM and wmkvfm.org streaming my column “Life after 50” around the world on the Internet Mondays and Thursdays at 2:20 p.m. and Fridays at 8:50 am. And as a blog on growingbolder.com, Facebook and Linkedin.com.

AARP offers a dynamite new program called “Life Reimagined” online for those among us who are bored with retirement and seek a “power of purpose.”

If you have real expertise and want to share, this new program offers you, through its “Calling Cards” the opportunity first define your personality and skills, then see what new ways you can use them. It also, if you wish, offers you an opportunity to offer your expertise to others through paid consultations.

I did the life reimagined program and came up with “Alice Reimagined.” Turns out I’m best at writing. No surprise. I tapped into their “Calling Cards” first to fine hone to my five most important and definitive personal skills. Then I had to put them in order determining what I liked best as number one and the rest in order of likes.

Of course writing was number one. Always has and always will be. I’ve been doing it since age 8 when I wrote and published my own newspaper called “the Paul Street Weekly.” I distributed it to all our neighbors. But it was short-lived. Next door a male teen had a party while his parents were away. I reported on it. His parents threatened a law suit if that “rag” didn’t cease publication and distribution. Ended my publisher’s career.

But this new AARP “Life Reimagined” program online at their site might allow anyone to define and perhaps discover hidden or squelched talents to bloom once again in retirement. Or just do the work at the site for fun.

It even gave me a site and course offered by Stanford University to hone my writing skills. But that tuition was out of my league.

However I love the concept of a makeover or “Life Reimagined”. All of us occasionally need a kick in our imaginations to restart anew in retirement, to discover new or even imagined new talents, and to make life exciting again.

Can it be scary? Sure. Can it be fun? Always. Will I explore new possibilities as an experienced volunteer in new fields after AARP gave me my “Alice Reimagined” program? It’s on the horizon.

So ask yourself, what would you do in a life reimagined? Go to AARP’s site now and test yourself out. Perhaps you may find a surprise future is in the cards for you.
