@debworks Deb Brown, live in Iowa, blogger, newspaper editor, home business - looking to learn how to monetize internet activity, 53, http://www.debworks.com, emphasis on shopping local and working from home, interviews that also go into my paper
@jcarlin Jackie Carlin. Dir of Web Content, GrowingBolder.com. Old media refugee (TV @ local and network level). Inspired daily by ppl we meet
@finolaprescott currently reinventing myself - 44 yrs young jewelry artist (currently under re-invention),sometimes event planner, arts developer, blog at http://sunrainor.blogspot.com
Technology @jcarlin: My 87yo great aunt in Pa. has joined facebook to keep up w/ farflung family. @ newscafe: As a newspaper guy I can tell you those who don't dig digital and digging their own grave. @dannybrown: Tech and users grow with each other. The car, now standard. The jet plane, now standard. The TV, now standard. No tech out of reach @JasonGBCam: I love technology, but the PRINTED word will still always have value for me. @marcmiddleton: The internet has brought down all of the gatekeepers. Anyone can "publish" anything they want at anytime without anyone's permission. @ uberbabyboomer: @dannybrown from my ptv the natural progression is how we integrate tech in our lives; my first comp. purchased when i was 40... now I am learning to bring my educ. skills online from blogs to online teaching; all logical progression of using tech to support.. @dannybrown Many are suckered in with the "only the young get tech" - uh, no, anyone who wants to will *get* tech* @PopArtDiva: @dannybrown I agree - it's the fear that tech is complicated that stops most older ppl - it's not - we need to get that across
Deep Thoughts NatalieTM: @mmiandrea We live in an age of new enlightenment, I am optimistic that it will shift. Maybe not overnight, but..... @peninasharon: @marcmiddleton If they called Twitter "Viva la Revolution' and blogging 'Power to the People', AT&T+big media would have a hissy fit @marcmiddleton: In 300 years they'll all be looking back and saying, "If only I was alive in 2009." We're living on the leading edge opportunity @uberbabyboomer: yesterday @Armano said, "hope is the new courage" & for me as a boomer and uber at that, it was a great way to look at aging. @marcmiddleton: The great Satchel Paige "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were?" @TheLynn: my belief is that this is just the start...like 8 track tapes, we have exciting thing in store for us...Big changes
Miscellaneous @dannybrown: There's a whole captive audience of *older* ppl that can offer great outsourcing and unrivaled experience for Web co.'s if they look @NatalieTM: How do you manage your energy and relationships? If you haven't cleaned up UR personal OS,everything and anything can be overwhelming! @sherisaid: @ageopportunity I'm about 27 inside, I think. Old enough to know what's what, still young enough to be goofy. @uberbabyboomer: it is that old adage you are as old as you feel you are.
Intergenerational Relationships @marcmiddleton: @dannybrown we cherish the younger peeps. I don't think there is anyone in this room that's not invigorated by intergenerational @dannybrown: @marcmiddleton Right, which is why biz should encourage cross generation learning as opposed to agist segregation @peninasharon: @dannybrown 'more experienced' doesn't always = CHANGE @jeffrey_brandt: @marcmiddleton one of the best mentors in college i ever had was a man taking nite classes, older then my dad @marcmiddleton: @jeffrey_brandt There were very few role models like that even 10 years ago. Now they're are everywhere, if we'll only look. @prchicago: Got my M.A. at 52 ...loved it, loved the kids and got better grades!
Family/Relationships @mmiandrea: @natalieTM As a grandparnet, I do not htink kids or adults play enough. To much work suppresses imagination at all ages @debworks: can I tell you how cool it is to sit here w/my mom and she is watching? … my mom had a blast - got the twitter and tweetchat concept right away. 78 y/o, gotta love it- still learning @marcmiddleton: Interviewed Adolph Keifer Mon. 92, swims every day, runs a multimillion business, has a smokin hot 89-year-old wife. That's huge! @jeffrey_brandt: @marcmiddleton smokin hot or not, a luvin spouse is key to much success & happiness @judywriter: @PatNarciso My mom's BF is 12 years younger than she is. How about that?!? She's 85, he's 73. And they're in love, 10 yrs. @sherisaid: @jeffrey_brandt my dad, at 72, is still the best diesel mechanic in mississippi. he can't retire. there's no one to take his business
Big Ideas @dannybrown: Need to look at how other countries treat their elderly as far as benefits and care goes. Our system fails them @sherisaid: @dannybrown mentoring and apprenticeship are old ideas that should be brought back immediately. We need to create youth opportunities @dannybrown: Idea. Companies sponsor colleges to have talks from older biz ppl to biz students. They get cost-effective mentoring + better grads @debworks: @dannybrown @marcmiddleton isn't this administration all about working both sides of the aisle?how about both sides of the age divide @dannybrown: Saw a report that said CEO's are complaining about graduate quality. So why not *hire* maturity to mentor students?
Ageism @judywriter The caste system is alive and well in the U.S. Different criteria to slice & dice us to form various castes @debworks: @MarcMiddleton @judywriter but we do NOT have to accept the caste system. We can set the bar. We must. @prchicago: I think much of the ageism problem is how we regard ourselves...present company excepted!
@marcmiddleton: The segregation of society based upon age, race, religion, finances, education, etc, etc SUCKS. @prchicago: @marcmiddleton Agreed...but I think that ageism will become more pronounced over the next five years. @judywriter: @prchicago Why do you think ageism will increase in next 5 years? I've been hoping it'll get better w/ boomers aging. @prchicago: I'm seeing it happening now...esp with the difficulty those over 50 are having finding jobs in this economy
@marcmiddleton: When you work closely with someone age goes away. Just like color. @jasunshine1011: @MarcMiddleton: Agree with you that when you work closely with someone, age goes away. I learn so much from colleagues 50+ (I'm 38). @peninasharon: @dannybrown older people add value - it's that 'branding yourself' thing. Learning more abt that @PopArtDiva: (People) can't see the forrest for the sagging bark! We need to overcome this believe that ppl over 50 are stodgy @PopArtDiva: God, I get so sick of labels though - it's so limiting … I find most stereotypes unfair and untrue - I see all people as individuals, applying a label belittles uniqueness
The Age of Opportunity @debworks: @dannybrown we can expect it and teach them that this is the way to go. isn't that why we are here? to teach others, to learn? @dannybrown: @debworks *We* are. The trick is in making it worthwhile to others that they see benefits and want to join in @debworks: @dannybrown amen mybrother. so once again, how do we do that? love the brainstorming - more heads, better ideas. @uberbabyboomer: @dannybrown @debworks I am quite suddenly finding myself looking forward to #ageop; how can I help you make it worthwhile; seriously:) @jcarlin: This just goes to show that there is a place for intelligent convo .. in 140 characters or less! @uberbabyboomer: Since #ageop trends on twitter, think of the collective power we have achieved; now to do some good with it. Ideas? send to @AgeOpportunity @Amykr: @AgeOpportunity thank you all for the interesting and fun disucssion @ judywriter: Had a great time at #ageop. And tweeted w/ some good tweeple.
Retirement/Reinventing Yourself @mmiandrea I am doing just what I want to do. I am energyzed by learning ... Love theGrowing Bolder mindset sherisaid: @PopArtDiva my husband can't WAIT to retire...he's 45. I can't WAIT to find my next challenge and learn something new. @sherisaid: @PopArtDiva I know, how could I possibly retire before I have learned everything there is to learn? @sherisaid: @jeffrey_brandt I figure it's not over. I'm giong to be 50 in july. I have 20 more years before I have to worry abour retirement @marcmiddleton: The web presents so many new options for "retirement." It's incredibly exciting. @PopArtDiva: @kwidrick Honestly, I want to die with a crayon in my hand, but I'd like the security of knowing I could drop it if I wanted to!!! @prchicago: Not really reinventing...rather upgrading myself! @mmiandrea: Like to think of it as evolving myself as I learn new things. Tweeting, rowing, writing articles - I did not do when I was younger @dannybrown: Evolve is just another word for more experienced. If business is evolving, use the experience around you, regardless of age @finolaprescott: @peninasharon I'm so much more at ease with change now I know it's not the end of the world, just new start
Recession/Economy @marcmiddleton: The recession presents amazing opportunity to those who are nimble and creative. The bloated whales are being slaughtered. @PopArtDiva: @ageopportunity I will probably never retire thanks to this downturn - they'll raise the edge of social security to worm food, lol @jeffrey_brandt: @PopArtDiva i prolly wont retire either. 401K is no good and the kids 529s are also tanked @marcmiddleton: I may be the last to hear it but I've seen the term "Baby Gloomers" 3 times today describing the sandwich gen in the econ. Downturn
Sandwich Generation @jcarlin: we need a new phrase: double decker gen. my grandparents, parents and now kids could possibly all end up with us! @judywriter: @AgeOpportunity My mom recently started into memory & cognitive probs. A shock! Trying to just help & be there but it's a heartbreak. @jeffrey_brandt: @judywriter i know what u mean. had to tie my dads ties for him, doesnt have the dexterity or mental retention to do it anymore @TheLynn: remember the serenity prayer...there are just some things that you can not change...you need 2 take care of U or U can't help anyone! @judywriter: @jeffrey_brandt It's tough to see a parent struggling so much, isn't it? I just feel so bad for my mom! I'm 2,500 mi. away. @mmiandrea: Can you Skype with a parent 2500 miles away to feel more connected by seeing each other?
