What a great turnout! We're always amazed and awed at the number of new people that show up at #AgeOp every week, but even more privileged and proud of the regulars who make the Thursday night chats a weekly habit.

This week, we kicked of the discussion with some breaking news -- moments before the start of the #AgeOp chat, the U.S. Senate voted to give regulators the ability to limit the amount of nicotine in cigarettes. Those in favor of the move point to the 400,000 deaths in the U.S. every year from smoking. Those against say it's an example of the government sticking its nose where it doesn't belong! So what does our crew think?

Well, many of the chatters smoke or have smoked, so the opinions came fast and furious!

@StarStrukLynna: Smoked until my 40s ... Miss it still...I quit cold turkey but had to wait until husband was ready to quit, too...he did patch.
@PopArtDiva: I wish the government would keep it's nose out of my personal business - smoking or not.
@MisterQwerty: Used to - I gave up nearly 8 years ago - now I hate 2nd hand smoke!
@KCLAnderson: Here's the deal, no one wants regulations on nicotine or fats but then they sue when they get a disease
@GetResults: I survived throat cancer but never smoked, go figure
@mkatmahoney: I smoked for years. My greatest accomplishment was stopping...horrific addiction...cold turkey-hardest thing I've ever done
@gerohelper: good move to limit nicotene, never smoked, smell makes me cough
@SkipStein: I quit smoking when cigarettes went over 50 cents a pack@ been a while...a girlfriend told me once that kissing a smoker was like licking an ashtray...gave me incentive to quit...
@PatBarone: Addiction is tough to regulate. Where is choice and personal responsibility v. "protecting" the public?
@boobtubious: Smoking is a personal choice. Educate your kids about it's affects so they can make the right choice when pressured.
@fabfatties: Choice and personal responsibility now that is a new concept!
@marcmiddleton: I've never smoked&support the rights of others but I wonder if smokers realize how overwhelming the smell that surrounds them is?
@Teri8D: I quit smoking 8 months ago. Best thing I ever did--very tough to do--totally free of nicotine!
@jcarlin: in theory don't like gov't involvemnt. HOWEVER, since taxpayers end up paying for smkrs/obese ppl's healthcare ...
@PatNarciso: Smoking is a bad habit. Never dugg a chick that did smoke. I respect those that do, however. Glad I'm in a 'clear air' state.
@davekorske: I didn't ever 'quit' smoking. I'm seeing how long I can go between cig's. Last was 1/2/2000 at 4:45pm. There are STILL days it's hard.

We moved on to talk about former Miss America, Carrie Prejean, and the news that she'd been fired from her job. Then we turned to a more serious topic -- the deadly shooting at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. We wondered, what is the state of tolerance in the world?

@rachelbirder: That was tragic..good thing he was stopped at the entrance. Too bad his anger drove him once again to commit a crime
@BillShafer: Do white supremists realize how pathetic they are? It's like finding a dinosaur. There's no room for them in any of our lives.
@DocLG: Guns seem to be too easily obtained here in the states... :-(
@PatNarciso: It's not the gun, but the mind behind the gun that makes the action positive or negative.
@marcmiddleton: Russell Simmons wrote a blog in Huffington Postabout a rise in racism and anti-Semitism in the US today. I hope that's not fact.
@Blmoyer: Europeans ans more group orientated so they are more tolerant of giving for the whole while us is less
@mkatmahoney: Why can't we all just get along and respect our differences. Is it that hard?
@Teri8D: I am waiting for the understanding that we are all humans--do we need to be attacked by aliens for that to happen? Seriously!
@PopArtDiva: Unfortunately it doesn't take only tough times for people to try to place blame and feel superior through discrimination
@rachelbirder: I suppose that's what happens anytime there is an act of terrorism-someone believes he or she is dying for a "cause"
@SkipStein: Hatred is a form of jealousy an failure to take responsibility for your own life. Easier to blame it on someone else.
@WilmaWoodson: It's easier to hate a category; hard to hate a real live individual. Social media will make some difference on stereotypes, I believ

That's a lot of heavy stuff! So we took a quick brain break and talked about our wedding experiences:

@cindyoyo: Hubby and I eloped!
@DocLG: My partner and I had a pagan, african, outdoor ceremony with cross cultural elements...jumped the broom, burnt candles, sang...
@NatalieTM: 26 years, "You've Got a Friend" was one of the songs sung at the wedding. Still applies ;-)
@Timberry: we agreed she'd make all the small decisions, and me all the big ones. And in 40 years, there was never a big one.

And we wrapped things up talking about how we celebrate "big" birthdays -- especially since George H.W. Bush planned to skydive (again) for his 85th birthday!

@PatNarciso: I like to celebrate any reason. Birthday, or happy un-birthday. However, I'd imagine my big birthdays will be spent with friends.
@DocLG: My family has gone to the islands (e.g. Jamaica, Bahamas, Caribean cruises) to celebrate "in a big way." I am happy to go camping.
