With a nice mix of regular faces and first-time #AgeOp'ers, we jumped right in! Memorial Day is just a few days away -- so we asked, what's your definition of a hero?
@Karenzee: Someone who does the right thing even if it's not easy or popular. @BillShafer: A hero is someone who selflessly helps others at their own expense. @gerohelper: Someone who selflessly serves others, doesn't have to make national news. Just helps others w/o thinking selfishly. @cindyoyo: A hero is someone that does for others. @JoeTheProducer: Definition of a hero? I learned last week we all have one in us. Matter of answering the call when that time comes. Hero's Journe @debra47: My definition of a hero is an individual who doesn't back down even if his views aren't popular;person has serious convictions. @DocLG: As a Quaker and daughter of a wounded Marine I have split feelings about Memorial Day. My dad is a hero for me...no doubt! @phyllismufson: Someone who feels a call to do what's needed to take a person/situation to the next level - and acts. @MisterQwerty: A hero really is someone with the humilty of CLark Kent, but makes the impression like Superman @DLindberg49: A hero is someone who does for others without thought for their selves and wants not recognition for it. @ShaynePacker: My definition of a hero? Unfortunately, some people dilute the word hero to mean "popular athletic champion"... My definition of a hero is someone who goes beyond what is expected by risking and sacrificing for the good of others.
That led us to wonder how the #AgeOp participants would be marking the holiday!
@katriord: I grew up decorating graves on Memorial Day. We called it "Decoration Day" and had family reunions, picnics. @kwidrick: I will be thinking about the men and women involved in current battles, and those who have lost their lives @gerohelper: I will be working the holiday. In the healthcare field, someone always needs to work the holidays. I've always seemed to work them. @khaffert: I will be spending the weekend making sure my kids understand why they are off on Monday. @rowdygrandma: It's sappy, but I am a "Saving Private Ryan" kind of gal so I will probably be watching a few war films.
So have our #AgeOp'ers done anything they consider heroic?
@JoeTheProducer: Have I done anything you feel is heroic? If I told you about it... it wouldn't be anymore. @WilmaWoodson: I think that true heros do not view themselves as heros. @Karenzee: I think heroic deeds are usually in the eye of the beholder, not the doer. @cindyoyo: I hope someone looks back on his life and considers me a hero. That would be a super great legacy, No?
After 15 minutes, we moved on to topic #2: Michael Vick's release from prison. Does the convicted animal abuser and NFL star quarterback deserve a second chance?
@OriginalLinDA: Thay need to put him in to a cage and drop him off in a foren country. @DLindberg49: Michael Vick - I guess everyone deserves ONE second chance, but after gaining acceptance over long period of time @DocLG: Sure...don't we all skrew up? @cindyoyo: My dog,Sam, very recently rescued, was used as bait dog. He is doing okay. Yes,Vick deserves another chance. @PatNarciso: Vick - yah, let the man have a second chance. I'm sure he can positively influence the world @GetResults: once a sentence is served, the debt to society is considered paid. Second chance time. @Karenzee: I think he deserves a second chance. Hopefully this has been a lesson for him. @BillShafer: I think Vick will be under the microscope and will have to slowly earn back public trust. @marcmiddleton: I don't like Vick at all but he paid his debt to society. That's the law. If we don't like it, we should change it. @gerohelper: Animal abuse is not forgivable in my book. The sentences in this country for animal abuse don't fit the crime. Vick is ruined to me. @khaffert: second chance at being a citizen, sure. NFL tough one to call. I think 10% of his salary should go to animal shelters.
From one current events story to another -- This headline by @rstrohmeyer got a lot of buzz today: "Are Baby Boomers Killing Facebook and Twitter?" Reactions? (Read the article here: http://cli.gs/VrprUG)
@GetResults: saw that piece. We're just making them better. Creating the larger community is good for all. @theheroworkshop: Twitter has been baby boomers from the start - the average age is in the 40s. Facebook may get killed by them though @gerohelper: Baby Boomers are ENLIGHTENING Facebook and Twitter. You are teaching my generation (18-just outta college) so much. @cindyoyo: We created the internet! How can that be bad? @MisterQwerty: Are boomers killing the net? No we invented it and much of the early exploration and content! @Baby Boomers are lending wisdom & vision to Facebook & Twitter. A mixture of generations & ideas is good for everyone @Karenzee: Is it our fault if the younger generation is coming up with some great ideas and we're jumping in? @PatNarciso: I'd like to think that Facebook and Twitter considered Boomers when developing their product. It must scale! Or it will fail. @phyllismufson: How can that be? Generations are free to play in their own neighborhoods if that's what they want. @MisterQwerty: It's a bit like me and my son arguing about Rock music. He thinks he discovered it, but I discovered it first. @debra47: Overall reaction is that social networks aren't owned by any particular age group. @CottonCandyKid: I use facebook to keep in contact with my high school classmates and we have lots of fun on there. @MarcMiddleton: Baby Boomers are figuring out powerful, meaningful ways to use social media. i.e. AGEOP!! SM is a tool. We all use it differently. @Seniors4Living: The whole "killing" verbiage bugged me. Contributions across age groups make things richer... @khaffert: The article makes baby boomers sound like locust. Traveling in packs and descending on FB and Twitter @SusanBaumann: I figure I taught my kids how to use computers; they can tolerate me friending them. @WayneHurlbert: Thanks to blogs, Twitter, Facebook, BogTalkRadio I have multiplied my contacts many times over. Social media is powerful
To wrap it up, we asked -- in light of a new study that says opposites really do attract -- what makes a good mate?
@MisterQwerty: Don't agree. My 1st wife became too opposite eventually - and we parted after 20 yrs. I feel this is common too. @MarcMiddleton: We are all on a singular journey that is made better by a significant other. A good mate is one who supports your journey. @Karenzee: Opposites may attract but not necessarily work long term. @CottonCandyKid: My husband and I are really opposites. But that is good. We'llbe married 43 years in June. @cindyoyo: My mate must have a good sense of humor about life! 33 years and counting! Woohoo! @debra47: Opposites attract when young but once past certain age it could be problem. One needs mate that has common passions. @katriord: A good mate technically is one who complements your strengths and weaknesses, completes to make total package. @gerohelper: Good Mate: empathetic, loving, equal partner, cuddly, smile starts on the inside & radiates out, sense of humor @Seniors4Living: The key is not so much "opposite" as it is "complementary" to your highs and lows
And a good night got better with compliments like this:
@drkisane: I only made it to #ageop for the last few minutes and I still feel totally invigorated - such wonderful ppl - such fun! @cindyoyo The #ageop chat goes by so fast that it's not easy to catch everyone. As always interesting topics. @GetResults: @ageopportunity what a good host. It's like it used to be in politics, hard to get out the door
