It's been a big week for reality television, with some good, some bad and some big drama! So, in the days of Jon & Kate Plus 8, American Idol, Apprentice, etc., would you ever consider going on a reality show? Which ones? What if money was involved?

@mkpelland: I detest reality TV and don't want to see anyone's personal problems on the air.
@marshahudnall: no show for me. i don't like to watch reality shows so can't imagine anyone wanting to watch me!
@mincedmedia: Who controls horizontal n vertical for ratings? Reality TV would not portray the real me.
@katriord: It would really depend on the show. I'd appear on something like Top Chef if I were that talented.
@theheroworkshop: Not a chance I'd bring my kid on a TV reality show. I'd go on Survivor though.
@JoeTheProducer: How much money? I'd prefer to produce the thing. (but even those skills are questionable)
@NatalieTM: To each his own. A prod. from wife swap contacted my company 4 referrals. 1st reaction was ugh, then realized lots of people dug it.
@gerohelper: the only reality TV I like are shows like Extreme Makeover Home Edition which have a message of hope & renewal.
@debra47: I would have no interest in appearing in any reality show. I've had my time in front of a classroom of kids and that's enough.
@MisterQwerty: Reality TV should have stuck to Candid Camera - I liked that!
@cindyoyo: I think the 8 kid situation is already super stressful, right? TV show adds more stress. Not good. Not worth it. Kids suffer
@BillShafer: Reality shows are the evil spawn of the Jerry Springer generation
@WayneHurlbert: I have little interest in realty TV. I especially avoid the competition shows like Survivor & Idol.

Since reality TV only got a lukewarm response from the #AgeOp crowd, we decided to talk about a different kind of reality television -- late-nght talk shows! Jay Leno signed off from "The Tonight Show" this week. Is he your favorite host? Who else stands out?

@SkipStein: No will ever top J. Carson.
@NatalieTM: Always a Carson then Letterman fan. Seems bizarre that Leno's reign is over! Didn't he just take over for Johhny? LOL
@BillShafer: Best talk host ever? Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Carson, Letterman... Leno isn't close!
@JoeTheProducer: Carson influenced my humor at a young age, and I liked his clever ad-lib remarks.
@debra47: I preferred Carson to Jay Leno but if I had to choose between Leno and Letterman I would choose Leno.
@kwidrick: I know, Leno's time seemed to go so quickly! Not a host, but I do still love Saturday Night Live
@katriord: Johnny Carson was a classic. I grew up loving Dick Cavett late night, learned a lot watching that, and the Mike Douglas Show.
@Dlindberg49: I always would watch either Leno or Letterman...usually until I got sick of Letterman, but Carson was the best
@mincedmedia: I am into the quirky show hosts. David Letterman, Jon Stewart. Leno reminds me of an old vaudevillian.
@Caregiving: OH! I LOVED the Mike Douglas Show. You just brought some great memories of me, my siblings and the TV. :)

With such a diverse group of people, it was time to talk love and marriage. First, we asked who is married -- and whether it's for the first time or not. Who has kids? Grandkids?

@katriord: Married, four stepchildren, nine grandchildren. First for me, second for my husband.
@theheroworkshop: Second marriage with first kid due in 50 days.
@drkisane: Divorced, four children
@WayneHurlbert: Never married. No children
@MisterQwerty: Debbie Here & I are married to each other - we are still on kids, not grandkids yet. I'm too young to be a grandad! ... Second marriage and better for it. I got the chance to have a second go at it!
@PatNarciso: Single, never married. No kids, or grand kids... I believe.
@MarshaHudnall: I'm married, first time, although had 2 'serious' relationships before. 2 kids, no grandkids
@cindyoyo: Married 33 years to the same man, one child
@SkipStein: My daughter just had baby #7 a couple of weeks ago. Proud Grandpa: 6 boys one Princess!
@mkpelland: married, 2nd time three kids, 3 step and 6 grands all under 4
@DLindberg49: married, second time for 16 years to my best friend, two daughters from first, 30 and 20 years old
@JoeTheProducer: 21 years. ending soon. all good.
@jcarlin: married and we had our 1st child 16 months ago. Waited long time to get married b/c I'm a child of divorce
@sherisaid: marriedsince the dawn of time (26 years) 19 and 21, no grandkids (knock on wood)
@debra47: I'm married to @MisterQwerty who is husband #2. Would have liked to have met him sooner; not likely as he was in UK.
@DAK04: I'm at 27 years with 2 kids.
@finolaprescott: Married 11yrs, stepdaughter
@BillShafer: Married 20 years. Do the rest of you also feel you're still learning about each other?

What makes a relationship work through the years and do the requirements change?

@mkpelland: I think as years go by it is quieter to have a lot of similar tastes
@WilmaWoodson: When you understand the Personality Types, you can enjoy opposites more.
@katriord: First five years of our marriage my husband and I were literally inseparable. Now I cherish occasional alone time. That's life. ... Am I prepared for it to change again? I'm never fully prepared. The next changes won't be good ones.
@MisterQwerty: Debbie & I both has long marriages before our current marriage. 20 & 25 years respectively. I feel this kinda split is morecommon now
@NatalieTM: Big shift when kids went to college. Found we were interested in doing more things together again, and (ahem) rekindling love life.
@MisterQwerty: this re-evaluation in middle age I feel is becoming more common. Why be miserable into your twilight years
@SkipStein: Growing together makes us stronger. For better or for worse.... we pray for better! Survive the worse.
@DLindberg49: stages are hard to define, age perspective and second time, etc. It's just great when you find your best friend!
@MarshaHudnall: hub & i are in different stages. he wants marriage to still be honeymoon; i've moved on. had to do w/ raising kids
@debra47: Relationships will always change. It's up to the couple to keep the relationship alive and keep the spark aflame.
@katriord: Biggest adjustment for me was going from being single and independent to married, and giving up some of that.
@MrElderCare: They must change as we change, because we always will. Laws of growth. Vibrant marriages require reinvention.

And to end the night, we got a little political. Okay, a lot political. It all started with this question, then look where it went!

"President Obama has nominated Sonia Sotomayor, a Hispanic woman, to the U.S. Supreme Court. Thoughts?"

@mkpelland: I love her backstory. It's real, like mine
@MisterQwerty: Why not? It's a good move reflects your growing hispanic population
@katriord: I'm favorably impressed, but didn't know a lot about her beforehand, admittedly. ... I'm more bothered that we need to "fill slots" with appointments, will be glad when our world has moved past all that.
@BillShafer: I hope Sonia Sotomeyer is wonderful. The country can use a big thinker!
@NatalieTM: I find all the controversy about her comments re: wise Latino woman vs. white male so out of context. It makes sense.
@gerohelper: I think Sotomayer is an excellent choice if she can prove that she relies on laws more than emotions on the bench
@sherisaid: my thoughts: I hope he nominated her for her record and her judgment, that she was the best person for the job
@SkipStein: Picking a Supreme Court Justice based on race is the ultimate in profiling. What about qualifications? Judicial track record?
@MrElderCare: I have no interest in activist judges. It's one of the reason our country is in such a mess. If she's an activist, not for me.
@WilmaWoodson: Sonia Sotomayer has an outstanding record. Very qualified.

After that, we asked the non-Americans in the room for their views on American politics.

@finolaprescott: US Policy in general? difficult to say in 140 characters:)
@MisterQwerty: What do we think? When you kept voting for Buh we thought the country had had a communal lobotomy
@theheroworkshop: I think American politics are as crazy as most countries - they're just on a bigger stage.
@BillShafer: Politics is such a nasty business that no one with any sense wants to be involved anymore. Only primordial ooze left
@MarshaHudnall: it truly is nasty. can't imagine why anyone would want to be involved, even primordial ooze
@MisterQwerty: As a frequent visitor to your country I can't belive the bias of your media and newspapers towards Republicanism and War
@drkisane: American politics fascinating to observe - America is in real trouble ... The gun lobby, the military, the pharmaceutical industry have so much power
@DLindberg49: anyone with money has too much power...if every single person voted..... we would gain some of that back
@MrElderCare: Good reason to replace the income tax with an national retail sales tax. Eliminates the power of lobbyists.
@debra47: Bush admin made sure that they kept American public afraid. Abhor what happened in those 8 years.
