Actor James Garner Suffers Stroke

Actor James Garner is recovering from what his publicist calls a minor stroke, and is expected to go home from the hospital soon.  Garner, an Oscar nominee for "Murphy's Romance" and star of TV shows including "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files," turned 80 in April.

His publicist says Garner started feeling sick on Friday, and went to the hospital to be checked out.  "He's still in the hospital, but my understanding is he is doing well and will be going home soon. When, exactly, we have not been told yet," says Jennifer Allen.

Garner was also nominated for an Emmy for his role as Bret Maverick in "Maverick," a show in which he played a riverboat gambler who preferred running from trouble than facing it.  His film credits include "The Children's Hour," "Victor/Victoria," and "The Great Escape."  Recently, Garner played a father in the TV sitcom "8 Simple Rules ... for Dating My Teenage Daughter."  He joined the cast after the death of actor John Ritter.
