Academy Award-Winner Seriously Hurt in Crash
Posted August 4, 2008, 12:36 pm in MoviesAcademy Award-winner Morgan Freeman has reportedly been seriously injured in a car crash -- several reports, including from MSNBC, the New York Daily News and TMZ.com, say the 71-year-old was driving the car on Sunday night in Mississippi, when his car somehow left the road, flipping several times. Police say Freeman was eastbound on Highway 32 near the town of Ruleville, and that he and a female passenger had to be rescued from the vehicle.

Rescue crews took Freeman to the hospital, where a spokesperson says he is listed in serious condition; there's been no word on the condition of his passenger.
At 71, Freeman is still very active in the acting community -- appearing recently in the blockbuster hit "The Dark Knight." He lives in Charleston, Mississippi, which is about 30 miles from the accident scene.
In 2004, Freeman won the Academy Award for his work in "Million Dollar Baby," and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for best actor in "Driving Miss Daisy."
3:25pm update: Freeman is said to have non life-threatening injuries, and was able to speak with investigators at the scene in the moments after the accident. A Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesperson says it appears he was heading towards his home, and that it's possible the actor fell asleep while driving. Police have ruled out alcohol as a factor. The passenger has now been identified as Demaris Meyer, and investigators say both victims were wearing seat belts. The car is registered to Meyer.
