Academy Award-winning director Sydney Pollack died of cancer on Monday.

His agent said the 73-year-old director, actor and producer died at his Pacific Palisades home surrounded by his family.

Pollack won two Oscars -- Best Director and Best Pictures -- for the 1985 film "Out of Africa" starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. He was also nominated for best director for the 1982 film "Tootsie."

In recent years, Pollack continued to direct A-list actors, including Nicole Kidman in "The Interpreter," Harrison Ford in "Random Hearts" and Tom Cruise in "The Firm."

He also produced and starred in last year's Oscar-nominated "Michael Clayton."

The Los Angeles Times says Pollack has been married to his wife, Claire, since 1958. They had three children and six grandchildren.
