"The Dark Knight" took in $155.34 million in its first weekend, setting a record for biggest three-day take ever. It also led Hollywood to the top-grossing overall box office weekend in U.S. History. The film topped the previous best of $151.1 million for "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007.

The musical "Mamma Mia!" debuted at No. 2 with $27.6 million. Overall, the weekend box office take was a record $253 million, beating the $218.4 million opening two years ago for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."
