Massive Earthquake Devastates Haiti
Posted January 13, 2010, 12:35 pm in NewsOfficials now say at least 72,000 people died during the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12, and this week's strong aftershocks could further hinder rescue and recovery efforts. The United Nations is estimating that more than 3 million Haitians are still in desperate need of food, water, shelter and medical assistance.
The earthquake was just the latest natural disaster to strike Haiti, one of the poorest nations in the world.

Even before this week's earthquake, humanitarians have tried to show the world just how dire the situation is in this Caribbean country. One of those people is Margaret Trost. In 2008, she told the Growing Bolder Radio Show that a chance trip to Haiti opened her eyes to unimaginable suffering of the people. Margaret was a grieving widow at the time, but her trip opened her heart to the people there, and in return, she was filled with a sense of purpose.
That life-changing trip led her to start the What If Foundation, which funds a food program in Haiti. She's also written about her experiences in her book, "On That Day Everybody Ate: One Woman's Story of Hope and Possibility in Haiti."
Margaret's organization is one of many that are working overtime to quickly get relief to the people of Haiti following this disaster. If you want to help, we urge you to check out one of the organizations below and do what you can -- no matter how little -- to help these people begin to rebuild their lives and their country.
Dr. Mark Hyman is another former Growing Bolder Radio Show guest who is working around the clock to help the victims of this disaster. He is on the ground providing medical assistance, and he's chronicling his work in Haiti on his blog on the Huffington Post. In a recent journal entry, he wrote, "Two orthopedic surgeons, my wife and father in-law, started the first amputation without water, electricity, or disinfectant. They used a rusty hacksaw we washed with vodka, lit by camping headlamps in an empty room with a few boxes of supplies we had packed into our plane."
Click here to read more journal entries and to look through his photos, including his visit with former President Bill Clinton, who arrived with supplies.

Posted 12:40pm January 15th, 2010As a Veteran who has served many times in disaster's this is the worse I have ever emagined. I have never been to Haitti, but have been to the Carabean and have wondered why the United States being the closest Allie to this small Nation has not helped them more that we have. Our Government sometimes is so DISGRACEFUL for it's lack of Humanitarian suffering. Such is true right here in our own country. They ROB the Old, Poor, youth and the disabled so they can show their POWER. Now, we have this terrible disaster on our doorstep and hundreds of thousands are either dead or dying and our country is dragging it's feet at geyying rescue people in the area. Send the Corps. of Engineer's, C.B.'s, and the four Services in there to get these people saved. We have many Ships that could be used to hose these people so the ground work could be managed without more tragic events.
As an American, I am so ashamed of my Government and the manner it has turned. The people of America should all stand up i Unity and demmand our Government stop throwing Trillions of Dollars on stupidity and start taking care of the needs at hand. I am 70 years young and would love to donate my time working in the area. I am experienced in many fields.

Posted 5:33pm January 14th, 2010I have been praying everyday for Haiti. I have a co-worker who had to work Tuesday night (11pm-7a.m) and it just broke my heart that our place of employment took CNN off the TVs just last week. She had to work all night without hearing or seeing updates. We couldn't even hear reports on the radio via internet. But, I guess it was better for her to keep busy or else she would have been glued to the TV as all of us are. She has the majority of her family in Haiti, only her brother who lives with her and her youngest daughter who lives in Paris were safe. My wish is for the reporters that are in Haiti take the time and put every face of the survivors on camera and let them say their name. Just by chance someone watching will see a loved one.

Posted 12:53pm January 14th, 2010Let's continue to ask God's protection ( not the god of Pat) as the Haiti rescue process moves forward. I am so very proud to be an American and a global citizen associated with the heart of swift kindness and action. This is another moment that reflects President Obama's campaign words and his governance actions, "We are not the blue states and the red states BUT the United States of America." We will not forsake or forget those that hurt and need our help! Now for those of us reading this, Have a wonderful day. It's always your choice! NJ www.hci-global.com

Posted 12:21pm January 14th, 2010Some things are so unimaginable and unbelievable that it is hard to get my mind to grasp the reality of this disaster. This has shaken me to the core.
My heart and my prayers go out to the citizens of Haiti and to their countrymen and relatives who have made their homes in the U.S.
Thank you GB for being on top of this story.
