On Nov. 26, 1789: A national Thanksgiving Day is observed in the United States as recommended by President George Washington and approved by Congress. On this day in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt will sign a bill establishing the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day.

On Nov. 26, 1968: U.S. Air Force helicopter pilot James P. Fleming rescues an Army Special Forces unit pinned down by Viet Cong fire, and is later awarded the Medal of Honor.
