On Jan. 10 1901, the American oil boom was born when a drilling derrick at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas, produced an enormous gusher of crude oil. It coated the landscape for hundreds of feet and flowed at an initial rate of 100,000 barrels a day. Crude oil would go on to the become the world's first trillion-dollar industry.
On Jan. 10, 1956, Elvis Presley recorded his first tracks for his new label, RCA. Among the songs recorded was "Heartbreak Hotel," the first song written especially for Elvis.
On Jan. 10, 2003, a collection of Beatles tapes known as the "Get Back sessions," which were stolen in the 1970s, were found after UK police cracked a major bootleg operation in London and Amsterdam. Five men were arrested.

Picture of the Day: Cue John Williams' iconic "Jaws" score when you see this guy coming! This is a view that few shark bite victims even get of the powerful chomp of a shark. The photographer snapped these pictures at the Shaka World aquarium in Durban, Saudi Arabia. They were shot through glass, which explains the reflections.
