Picture of The Day: The Barringer Meteorite Crater (also known as "Meteor Crater") is located in the Arizona desert. The crater is nearly a mile wide, and 570 feet deep. It was created about 50,000 years ago when a meteorite, estimated to be 50 meters across, slammed through the earth's athmosphere. The impact produced a massive explosion equivalent to a large thermonuclear explosion and about 150 times the yield of the atomic bombs used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The meteorite itself was mostly vaporized. In the 60's. NASA astronauts trained here for missions to the Moon. The crater is also a location in the 1984 film Starman.
