Picture of The Day: Great Blue Hole, Belize
The Great Blue Hole is a perfectly circular limestone sinkhole 60 milles off the coast of Belize.
It's more than 1,000 feet across and 480 feet deep. This incredible geographical phenomenon is one of the most astounding dive sites in the world, made famous by Jacques Cousteau who declared it one of the Top 4 scuba diving sites on Earth.

The hole itself is the opening to a system of caves and passageway that penetrate an undersea mountain. In various places, massive limestone stalactites hang down from what was once the ceiling of air-filled caves before the end of the last Ice Age. When the ice melted, the sea level rose, flooding the caves.

People in Belize think it should be one of the seven wonders of the world. It is protected by the Belize Audubon Society and is a Belize National Monument. It became a World Heritage site in 1997.
