Go Under the Knife to Get In That Bikini
Posted May 28, 2008, 1:00 am in Beauty by Growing BolderNo doubt about it, it's swimsuit season once again. Nothing feels better than the sun on your body in the heat of the summer. But then again, nothing feels worse than looking down at your body and wondering what the heck happened to it! Yes, deciding to head out to a public swimming area sure can separate the meek from the bold! It's a fool proof barometer of how you feel about yourself. Author Marilyn Kentz tells Growing Bolder it's something we all go through.
"There comes a point in the life of a baby boomer woman when she looks in the mirror and begins to gently pull her neck skin back to see what she used to look like. I've done this many times."
More people, women and men, are opting for cosmetic surgery. Kentz says where you live has a lot to do with the decision.
Now you look just like creature!'
"Here in LA, it's the law. The knife is this prairie home companion. Pulling, sucking, nipping, sewing, swelling is a way of life here. If you don't do it yourself, the skin police will come in the middle of the night and suck the fat from your behind and put it in your lips".
Kentz believes as a society we live in fear of aging. The star of the 1990s sitcom, "The Mommies", she wrote a book offering a different point of view. Kentz and co-author Nancy Alspaugh believe true happiness only comes when a person truly knows herself and is full of passion. In fact, Kentz says either of her books, "Not Your Mother's Midlife" and "Fearless Women," will give you more of a lift than plastic surgery and a push-up bra. Still, it's more and more common for women to choose the knife.
"Grandmas are downright scary here. Gone are the little old ladies who carry their pocketbooks close to their round figures on their way to the beauty parlor to get another permanent wave on their short, white hair. In the city of angels, you'd hardly recognize that same little lady jogging in her pink velour Juicy Couture sweat suit on her way to get her hair extensions moved up. Once in a while she'll see her reflection in the window glass and lift her really old, French-tipped, manicured hands up to her smooth, transparent cheekbones and begin to weep gratefully, 'I'm so beautiful!' They simply do not see themselves the way real people do."
"I understand that all women want to look attractive. Of course we do. That's why even the elderly wear lipstick. That's the true goal our LA women are striving for by incorporating the knife into their regimen. They just want to look attractive. However, I contend that we cannot be the best judges of what is attractive at 60-plus. The newly implanted, silicone-cheeked woman, casting a long shadow down her taut face, may see herself as a young, chiseled work of art, but, trust me, her friends are trying desperately to find a safe, neutral comment, 'Wow! Look at you! What a change!' While they're really thinking:
'Oh my, my, you changed your lips.
You moved your nips,
You sucked your hips.
Your cheeks are tall,
Your tummy's small
Tell me - was it worth it all?
Skin is tight, eyes won't close.
What happened to your Roman nose?
You have tried each procedure.
