Growing Bolder Remembers: Veterans Day

Posted November 9, 2010, 1:47 pm in Veterans

Every day and in every country, men and women put their lives on the line to keep us safe. Today, as the United States marks Veterans Day, Growing Bolder wants to say a sincere thank you to members of the military, their families, and the organizations that dedicate themselves to protecting the freedoms we all hold dear.

As part of our tribute, we encourage you to take time today to visit our Veterans channel, and watch and listen to the stories listed below. Please feel free to share them -- each story has both a link and an embed code, making it simple and free to post on your own blog or Web site. In addition, by clicking the "share" button on each page, you'll see links to the most popular social networking Web sites, including Twitter and Facebook. Please use them to spread the word about the outstanding work being done on behalf of all Americans.

World War I
  • American troops had little idea what to expect when the US entered this war in 1917. Fred Fruehan did not hesitate to enlist, although he would rather have stayed in Pennsylvania and married his sweetheart, Caroline. But as Fred told us in this interview shortly before his death in 1996, all involved felt that duty to his country had to come first.
World War II
  • There aren’t many people like Bill Coleman. There used to be, but World War II vets are vanishing. It’s why their stories are so important. Not just for their first-hand accounts, but also to ensure the lessons they learned don’t just fade into history. Bill shares the wisdom of the greatest generation, explaining what it was like to be a part of the D-Day invasion at Normandy and what it felt like to look death in the face when he was captured by Nazi soldiers.
