On This Day:

In 1858: Here comes the wedding song. Felix Mendelssohn's "The Wedding March" becomes a popular wedding recessional after it is played at the marriage of Queen Victoria's daughter, Victoria, and Friedrich of Prussia. It's a song future stars Elizabeth Taylor (8 times), Zsa Zsa Gabor (9 times) and Mickey Rooney (8 times) will get to know very well.

In 1881: Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now? If your cell phone drops a call today, make sure to take a moment to remember Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, who on this day, formed the Oriental Telephone Company.

In 1937: "The Guiding Light" makes its radio debut and later hits the TV airwaves, making it the longest running broadcast program in American radio and TV history.

In 1959: The first transcontinental flight of a Boeing 707 in the United States starts the jet age. Some are still waiting for their luggage to arrive.

In 1949: Shirley Dinsdale wins the first Emmy award at the first ceremony held at the Hollywood Athletic Club ... beating out Susan Lucci! Dinsdale and her puppet, Judy Splinters, took honors as Most Outstanding Television Personality and Mike Sotkey's "Pantomime Quiz Time" was selected as the year's top television show.

In 1961: In Washington D.C., John F. Kennedy delivers the first live presidential TV news conference.

In 1980: Paul McCartney is released from a Tokyo jail, 10 days after customs officials find 7.7 ounces of marijuana in his luggage when he arrives with his band, Wings, for an 11-date tour in Japan. Public officials urge the government to make him stand trial for drug-smuggling, which could have sent him to prison for seven years. Instead, he is deported and told he is no longer welcome in Japan. Apparently, they had a change of heart. A decade later, he returns to Tokyo to play a concert. Paul and his wife, Linda, later famously say that those 10 days were the only nights they spent apart in their nearly 30-year marriage.

Today's Thought:
"Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no help at all."
