Alan Greenspan
Born March 6, 1926

As Chairman of the United States Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan was, arguably, the most powerful financial figure in the world for decades. Even before assuming the chairmanship in 1987, he wielded enormous influence as economic advisor to presidents Nixon, Ford, and Reagan.

After the Age of Seventy
  • Dr. Greenspan also served as Chairman of the Federal Open Market Committee.
  • Received honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, Pennsylvania, Leuven (Belgium), Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Colgate, and Edinburgh universities.
  • His other awards include the Thomas Jefferson Award for the greatest public service performed by an elected or appointed official, 1976.
  • At age 72 (1998), recipient of the American Philosophical Societyís Benjamin Franklin Award for Distinguished Public Service.
  • At age 74 (2000), decorated with the Legion of Honor (Commander) by France.
  • At age 76 (2002), named honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire,
  • At age 77 (2003), the first recipient of the Gerald R. Ford Medal for Distinguished Public Service.
  • At age 78 (2004), Greenspan took office, for a fifth term as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.
  • He currently works as a private advisor making speeches and providing consulting for firms through his company, Greenspan Associates LLC.
