In 1970: As an April Fools' joke, John Lennon and Yoko Ono issue a statement to the press that they are having dual sex change operations.

In 1984: Marvin Gaye is shot and killed by his father after a heated family argument on April 1. Gaye had just received a Grammy for his hit, "Sexual Healin." It was his first top 40 single in five and a half years. Gaye's father received only probation after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

In 1999: A New Jersey man is arrested and charged with originating the "Melissa" e-mail virus, which infected more than 1 million computers worldwide and caused more than $80 million in damage. (David Smith serves just 20 months in federal prison in exchange for helping the FBI track down the authors of other computer viruses).
