Cyclist Smashes State Record

Cyclist Sandy Scott Zoom In
The story becomes more and more incredible every year. For the eleventh time, Sandy Scott has won the Florida State Cycling Time Trial Championship.

Instead of slowing down, which you might expect from a 69 year old, Sandy keeps getting faster. He shattered his previous time, which by the way, was the record setting mark, by 18 seconds.

But there’s something else that makes his story even more compelling. Just a few years ago, Sandy suffered a life-threatening injury. In 2005 he was headed for victory at the Florida Senior Games. A spectator stepped out onto the course right in front of him. Sandy had to wipe out to avoid a collision; as a result, he flew over the handlebars landing on the pavement head-first. He suffered a fractured C-1 vertebrae which doctors feared would end his cycling career.

But it didn’t! He put himself through a grueling rehab schedule that not only got him back on his bike, but also back in the winner’s circle.

Since then, he has been an inspiration, and a role model as to what’s possible in life. Oh, yes. And there’s one more thing he’s extremely proud of!

“My significant other, won the women's 60+ division so after the state awards ceremonies this fall, we will be sporting matching state champion jerseys.  I believe in not only Growing Bolder, but Growing Faster!"

But is there something he wishes we would learn from him? You bet there is!

"Sometimes I feel like shouting from the highest building the importance of proper Wellness techniques in the aging process.  If people would lift weights, do aerobic exercise, exercise their minds, eat properly, keep a positive mental outlook, have great relationships, have a goal(s) to work towards, have regular medical checkups, aging can be a very positive experience.  I find it so thrilling that at the age of 69, I am still setting personal bests!  I am really looking towards turning 70.  At the first of the year, my racing age will be 70, and their are so many state records that I plan to break!!"
