Find Yourself On the Road
Posted August 1, 2007, 7:00 pm by Growing Bolder StaffIf you suddenly find yourself alone in the world and searching for your life's purpose and direction, Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir about her life after divorce is sure to hit a nerve.
In "Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia," Gilbert treks the world to fill her stomach, soul and heart.
After a bitter divorce, the highly acclaimed writer quit her job, got rid of her belongings and set out on a yearlong journey.
She picked Rome as the place to learn to savor pleasures (read: a lot pizza, wine and gelato); a sacred ashram near Mumbai to learn spiritual devotion and Bali to achieve balance between earthly delights and divinity.
If it sounds like a movie, you're right. Gilbert says on her Web site that the book has been optioned as a star vehicle for Julia Roberts. Her previous writings in GQ magazine about her bartending days were already turned into the movie "Coyote Ugly."
Gilbert says she charted her journey as a prescription for solving her life, but she believes her inner journeys can be taken by anybody, whether they have the means to leave home or not.
Most of us won't be able to take Gilbert's life-altering journey, but her quest to discover who she really is is sure to make you think about what you're all about.
