Hear Her Roar

Posted December 9, 2010, 10:07 am

After unsuccessfully searching for a song that captured the personal empowerment she saw occurring all around her, singer Helen Reddy decided to write her own. On Dec. 9, 1972, her song, "I Am Woman," reached the top of the charts. "I thought about all these strong women in my family who had gotten through the Depression and world wars and drunken, abusive husbands. But there was nothing in music that reflected that," Reddy told Australia's "Sunday Magazine" in 2003. "I certainly never thought of myself as a songwriter, but it came down to having to do it."
