Posted November 23, 2009, 11:07 amThe first national celebration of Thanksgiving Day is held in the United States after President George Washington issued a proclamation in October designating for "the People of the United States a day of public thanks-giving" on Thursday, Nov. 24. It would not become a federal holiday until 1941.
