Jimmy Stewart's film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington debuts, later winning him the New York Film Critics Award for Best Actor. World War II would interrupt his career, but in 1985, at the age of 77, he would receive a special Oscar honoring his work. That same year, he would also win the Medal of Freedom.
