Frenchman Gets High! Parachute pioneer Andre Jacques Garnerin makes the first successful descent. He jumps from a hydrogen balloon at 3,200 feet. He was still jumping and innovating at the age of 54 when he was struck by a beam and killed while preparing his balloon for flight.
