On Feb. 23, 1861, President-elect Abraham Lincoln arrived secretly in Washington to take office, following word of a possible assassination plot in Baltimore.

On Feb. 23, 1954, the first mass inoculation of children against polio with the Salk vaccine began in Pittsburgh.

On Feb. 23, 1998,  42 people were killed, some 2,600 homes and businesses damaged or destroyed, by Tornadoes in Central Florida.

Picture of the Day: The most reproduced photograph in the history of photography was taken 64 years ago today, on February 23, 1945. During World War II, U.S. Marines on Iwo Jima captured Mt. Suribachi, where they raised the American flag. This iconic photo, taken by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal,  became the only photograph to win the Pulitzer Prize for Photography in the same year as its publication. The picture was later used to sculpt the USMC War Memorial, just outside Washington, D.C.
