On March 7, 1876, 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell receives a patent for a revolutionary new invention he calls the telephone.
On March 7, 1965, a group of 600 civil rights are forcefully broken up in Selma, Alabama by state troopers wielding billy clubs, tear gas and bull whips. The peaceful marchers only made it six blocks before they were brutally attacked by the officers. Television images of the clash, which was many Americans' first exposure to the situation in the South, roused support for the civil rights movement. The day would come to be known as Bloody Sunday.
On March 7, 1986, just over a month after the space shuttle Challenger exploded on liftoff, divers from the USS Preserver locate the shuttle's crew cabin on the ocean floor.
On March 7, 1989, Iran and the United Kingdom break diplomatic relations after disagreeing over author Salman Rushdie and his controversial novel, "The Satanic Verses."
