On January 25, 1905, a 3,106-carat diamond was discovered at the Premier Mine in Pretoria, South Africa. Weighing 1.33 pounds, it was the largest diamond ever found. It was later cut into nine large stones and about 100 smaller ones.

On January 25, 1924, the first Winter Olympics kicked off at Chamonix in the French Alps.

Picture of the Day: There she is ... Miss America 2009.  Miss Indiana Katie Stam captured the crown and a $50,000 scholarship on Saturday night in Las Vegas as the 82nd Miss America contest.
