Baseball
One day late last year, I was perusing GrowingBolder, which is a website you may have heard of. I stumbled across an article about a man who'd created an amatuer baseball league for adults, and decided to check out the league. After weeks of hitting hundreds (thousands?) of balls in batting cages, and going undrafted at one tryout, I have good news: I am a Pirate! No, not the Johnny Depp kind, the baseball kind. This is my chance to Grow Bolder. I just turned thirty, and I'm gonna play baseball for the first time in over 15 years! I'm thrilled for the chance, but slightly terrified of the bloopers and errors that are sure to come....

Posted 9:22 am February 18th, 2008Well, we lost to the Astros last night. They will be a formidable team this year. They hit 2 home runs off of us, leading to the use of the "mercy rule," sending us home early. I didn't get to play, but I got more valuable practice on my throwing mechanics, and had fun as a first base coach during our most exciting offensive inning. It's gonna be a long season, but we're ALL going to get better, and have fun along the way. I'm 30 years old and I get to play a kid's game once or twice a week...it's great!

Posted 4:14 pm February 12th, 2008So we lost our first game vs. the Diamondbacks, but that's okay. It's the beginning of a 24-game season. I got one at-bat in the bottom of the 8th, grounding out to the pitcher. I am glad to say I made contact on my first swing, and did not whiff at any pitches. However, an out is still an out. Next week I really want a hit. I'll be hitting the batting cages some more this week.

Posted 3:54 pm February 6th, 2008I had my first practice with the Pirates last night, and got a nasty red bruise on my ankle to show for it. That'll teach me to miss a ground ball! I had fun and have already learned some critical tips for improving my throwing mechanics (they need a lot of work). Our first game is Sunday morning, we'll see if I get any playing time. I m one of the new guys, and like I said I have a lot of work to do on my ballplaying skills.
