Started making an Altered Book art piece, while limping around on knee brace. It is lots of fun, and allows me to make pictures using color, paint, cut and paste like a kid!
Started out with an old recycle-able book, 2 inches thick. Glued about 5 pages together at a time with Elmer's glue, to make about 20 thick pages. Painted the outside covers with Gesso, then the inner pages, one or 2 at a time. Using a hair blow dryer to aid the drying. Taking several days........
Meanwhile, I am using pages taken from an old worn-out dictionary (with great old illustrations) to make new pages to glue or sew into the main book. Using photos taken of recent family reunion, with Halloween theme and lots of costumes, to embellish the pages. Using oil pastels and colored pencils to draw around and on the photos, and to write captions. Including leaves, trinkets, etc. in the page decoration.
Look this up online and you will find many great examples!

HEY THERE ' sandyb ' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that this maybe work'n, why don't you ask your cousins to try ' posting ' and even you could tell us some more about ' THE BOOK ' and try git'n a pic or 2 on your ' MEDIA '!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From what I am reading, this art form can be 'mind-boggling' and about anything that may come-to-mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

an info site like ' bellevuearts.org/exhibitions can 'fill-you-in' pretty-well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
