RAG RUG WEAVING

I got started in weaving by agreeing to help a friend who had bought a heavy old NEWCOMB LOOM and needed help in moving it.

So we went to look at the loom, finding it in the basement of an elderly widow in our local town with a ' PROBLEM '. Some years back , their remodeling work had left this heavy-thing ' LANDLOCKED ' without removal clearances !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after much study and discussion , the inevitable decision was made to dimantle it to small enough chunks  that would go up the stairs and around a corner, then thru the kitchen, dining and living areas and out thru the front porch.

After restoring the loom to an operable machine, my interest was honed to further study of weaving to the point that we hit the ARTS & CRAFTS SHOWS circuit in the Chicago Metro Area for 26 weekends every year from '80 thru '87, while still working full-time at Highway Engineering. Got 'winded' and put looms in storage Spr '88.

After meeting my weaving partner in '88, then both working 'til '91, we retired to the Ozarks to build the log-home we had drawn plans for in the Arkansas timber. Starting in '91, we decided we could not afford the bids we were getting, so took off on it ourselves

All of the looms were stored in the very front of our 45' van semi-trailer in the knowledge that they would come out after the ' CABIN ' was to a ' comfortable-status '. Building went  very, very slow while the 'newly-weds' holed-up in a 24 ft. Mini-Home until getting enough shelter in the ' CABIN', some 6-7 years in the making.

Finally in SMR '04, we were asked to help in our church VBS effort and got out our home-built folding NORWOOD-TYPE spinet loom built back there in the ' CRAFT-SHOW-'80S ' and been stored for all those years. This was the ' GOOD LORD ANSWERED PRAYER " ,as we have been at weaving ever since, including time for the new partner to start with only her sewing experience.

Which brings us up -to-date and gives some history on why we started  "bolderweavers" the NEW DISCUSSION GROUP, SO WON"T SOME OF YOU WEAVERS ' JOIN-IN '. I'M SURE OUR MEMBERS WILL DO THEIR " VERY-BEST " TO " BLOG-IT " ABOUT OUR SUBJECT OF ' WEAVING ' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What an exciting adventure you two have had with your looms and weaving, and building your own cabin. I have 2 cousins who weave, and have looms. Right now I am painting for my creative activity, but am interested in the process and will enjoy our friendship. I haven't had any comments on my blog, either. sandyb

You're so dedicated to your hobby! I've never tried weaving, but I loved quilting when I was in college. My roommate and I joined a group that made baby quilts for premature children.

Your post has convinced me to go home and dig out my sewing machine and get back to work!
