The other day I was thinking back on my life here in the Orlando area.

I have been living here since 1959. I am just amazed at the changes that have taken place. Some good...some not so good.

Life was so simple back then. During the week we came home from school, did our homework and time allowing went out to play till dinner. We ate, helped out with the dishes, watched our favorite shows(wich were suitable for all) Took our baths and went to bed.

Then came the weekends.  Saturday morning cleaning our rooms, doing any other chore asked of us and then the rest of the weekend was ours (except for church on Sundays.

My girlfriends and I would all get finished around the same time on Saturdays.

We would meet up at one of our houses. Then would head off to S&H Kress on Aloma in winter park.(walked 2 miles there and back.) Just to buy the latest 45 rpm record and buy a Cherry Coke and fries at the lunch counter. Or maybe we would walk to Park Av. to go to the Colony Theater (for 15  RC Cola bottle tops.)

Then a treat of our fav flavor ice cream at The Yum Yum Shop.

As we got older and learned to drive a new world opened up.

Off we would go to the local Steak&Shake on Mills Ave.Then to the one on Hwy 50. The A&W and Frishes Big Boy also were on our routs.

I remember drag racing down Mills and my girlfriend getting her first ticket.

We all pitched in to pay it. The Orlando Youth Center and the Maitland Civic Centers both had Teen nights with bands. We got dropped off and locked in till our parents picked us up.

I was also a huge fan of our Drive-In's.

The Prarie Lake  In Fern Park....Ri-Mar on 441.... The Winter Park on 1792 .

Bags of fresh popped popcorn in a big brown shopping bag and a jug of kool-aid, or sometimes splurge on a slice of pizza and an orange drink in a real orange looking container.

Tall cop named Slim knocking on windows fogged up...No Hanky Panky on his watch!

There was hardly any traffic back then four way stops at most major intersections.

My first job at fifteen was at The Hamilton Grill...wich is now Park Plaza Gardens.

There was a grocery store called The Marketessen that deliverd to your door..they had the best butcher shop, The hotel was called The Hamilton Hotel  wich was part of the grill now the Park Plaza Hotel.

Down town Winter Park is still unique in looks and still looks like it use to on the most part.

I remember the TV Channels ...WESH 2 ,WDBO 6 & WLOF 9..Each going off the air at midnight. I was on a kids show called Uncle Walts , and kissed Michael Landon at a Telethon for M.D.

I remember WLOF Channel 95 & WHOO radio stations that played our treasured music.

Ronnies on 50, Royal Castle,Beefy King,The Purple Porpise,S&H Green & Top Value Stamp stores, The list goes on and on.

If any of you out there remember any and would like to share please feel free.

Life was so much simpler back then and just writing this made me smile and took me on a trip...to the good old days of my life.

Very nice story, thank you! Sounds like a nice childhood! I think it was a bit like Happy Days with Fonzie?
