Okay, so I'm a home theater geek. I currently prefer watching crystal-clear Blu-Rays on my HDTV set at home to the frequently lousy projection (and terrible manners) at the multiplex. I have a large DVD collection, but have only acquired a handful of Blu-Rays (BD), mostly because I'm reluctant to "double-dip" and buy BD copies of movies I already have on DVD. Joyously, I've discovered a
great Blu-Ray sale at Best Buy. Some are as low as $9.99, with over 200 titles for $19.99 or less. Many of these titles are in-store, but even more are available to buy online.
There's a wide variety for movie lovers. Here's a somewhat random sampling:
Ghostbusters
Patton
Transformers
All 3 "Pirates of the Caribbean" flicks.
A Bridge too Far
The first 3 "Terminator" films
Top Gun
The Departed
Silence of the Lambs
Fargo
I see that my nearest BB has
"Zodiac" in-stock for $14.99.

It's a criminally underrated film-one of the best of 2007-and it was shot in HD, making for some beautiful night scenes that simply wouldn't look as good had they been shot on film (most of the time). I think I'm making a stop on the way home this evening. What the hell, I might just get "
Silence of the Lambs" as well. Please do not be alarmed that both movies I'm buying happen to be about the hunt for serial killers. I'm honestly not that twisted of a person. Really. I'm not. I may even get Top Gun for my wife, does that make you feel any better? No?
I'm pleased to see prices drop this quickly on BDs. The format is only about 2 years old, and I'm seeing Blu-Rays on sale at better prices than DVDs were when they were only 2-3 years old. Seriously, in 2000-2001 I frequently paid $22-25 for DVDs that had lousy tranfers and little to no bonus content. Maybe when we pull out of the recession this new format will really take off.
Don't have a Blu-Ray player? They're as cheap as half the price of the DVD player I bought in December of 1999. Here's
CompUSA.com's page of players, just to prove I'm not some BB shill.
For those who think that HD downloads will soon make BD and DVD irrelevant, have you ever tried to download a 2 hour HD movie? IT TAKES SEVERAL HOURS LONGER THAN WATCHING THE MOVIE TAKES...and that's if you're lucky enough to have no errors in the download. Then you have a movie collection stored on a hard drive that can be erased forever with 2 clicks of a mouse or with one lightning strike or power surge. Take it from a video professional, you ALWAYS want a physical backup of your media.
On that note, I shall leave you with my wish list of movies that have yet to come out on Blu-Ray:
Citizen Kane
Lawrence of Arabia
Bridge Over the River Kwai
Vertigo
All The President's Men
Touch of Evil
The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
North by Northwest
Duck Soup
Modern Times
There are others, but these are the most pressing for me. Get with it, studios! We need more classics to shine on Blu-Ray!
note: I have received no payment for this blog. I just wanted to share a deal I found today.
